    G2 vs Optimax

I found a pristine 22 Velocity currently with a 200 carb Merc on it. I am considering a 250-300. Wondered what the experience has been with the 300 XS vs the 300 G2? I am told the G2 is much more expensive than the optimax. I've always been a Merc guy but Bombardier builds a good product. Will appreciate all input and thanks.

I just repowered a 21' Checkmate Starliner with a G2 250HO...I've had Mercs, Yamaha, Suzuki and now Evinrude. So far so good with the motor...incredibly strong, smooth and quiet. Currently turning a 24P Bravo I FS at a shade over 6000 rpm and pulling 69 gps. Love the look!

You may find better speed by propping it in the 5500-5700 rpm range

I would stray from the BRP. I am still seeing failures above and beyond the Optimax motors and lowers. I would give them some time to finish getting the bugs out, if they ever do.

I went from 2011 250HO Etec to new 300xs 300xs 5mph faster. Burns 20 percent less fuel in everyday use. Far superior lower unit.

Love my G2 so far. I've put a few hours on mine and am thoroughly impressed. Everything on this motor was redesigned from the G1. Like anything, the first year has issues...mine was one of the the very first off the line and did not get installed on the hull for over a year after I bought it...and that was after it sat in the dealership for a few months. As such, it required 8 service bulletins and recalls performed before it could be released for service. Some of these were simple: change panel screws. Others were more complex, such as, remove and replace fuel pump. The early powerhead issue was traced back to the fuel pump. Fixed.

In my boating days I've had three Mercury: 175EFI, 225 Pro XS, and 250 Pro XS. All great motors. I've also had 1 Yamaha 225, 1 Suzuki 200DF, and now 1 Evinrude G2 250 G2. All great motors too. I've been lucky in that I've only had issues with one of them, the 175EFI (Bad harness...replaced and fixed problem).

    I heartily endorse the G2.

Ski team here uses a Stalker ATS to prop and test their twin and triple Dynes. Two 250HO G2s with sub-optimum props, lack of options at the time they were put on, still hit 40 mph a second and a half sooner than three highly optimized 2012 225 Optimaxes could. Three 225HO G2s crushed both the best time to speed and distance to speed marks the Optis could manage. They have been able to add bodies to acts, use the double G2 to pull acts only three Optis could manage and shorten run up distances dramatically, they were Mercury fanatics forever but wouldn't switch back now short of totally free motors.

If the G2 was available with a Sport Master type lower unit I'd probably be using that instead of a 300XS on my new build IF they were similarly priced but they aren't, the G2 costs the same as the street price of a 400R from what I've seen. I could be wrong.

If Evinrude creates a surfacing, low water pickup lower and the street price drops they can probably sell a lot more of these.

If Evinrude dealers hadn't been a bunch of dolts putting 1.71 ratio lightning equipped HO engines on frickin' pontoons, and chopper gun barges driving warranty costs to the moon, we would probably still have gearcase size, shape, and ratio options. BRP needs to get mass market volume up before they worry about our application. As I understand it BRP has yet to ever really make any money on Evinrude as a stand alone and it been like 13 or 14 years now.

300 G2 lowest price I found is 21K with basic rigging, 400R lowest price I found is 26K no rigging.

I think these prices are lowest possible...

Just the fact that I can use an inexpensive scan tool to troubleshoot my mercury or get a vessel view that also acts as a scan tool, that makes my mind up for me. With the etec if you change an injector you have to get it paired to the ecu. The engine is too dealer intensive for me.

So Mercury is claiming 300 pounds of torque for 300xs, while evinrude 600 pounds of torque for 300 g2, I understand 300g2 is 3.4 liter vs 3.2 on 300xs, but still for g2 to have double torque of 300xs is hard to believe, anybody seen dyno sheets?
