Bravo leaking oil from water intake
I tried posting this question on another boating forum with no results. its not a whacker, but I bet that I will get more info here.
1989 Sea Ray with 7.4 bbc and Bravo one drive.
I just installed a new SEI bravo lower unit. I have gear oil leaking out of the water intakes on the side of the gear case.
Last year when I pulled the boat out of the marina, I noticed 1/4" size bubbles rising up into the drive oil reservoir. I knew I had an issue.
This boat did sit in salt water for the last year, and took some pretty bad corrosion to the drive.
When I got the boat home, I tried to pull the drive Drain plug. It was stuck. All attempts to remove failed. I tried everything. I figured that the drive got water inside and corroded from the inside.
I purchased a new lower unit from SEI and installed last week. after filling with gear oil it started leaking out of the water intake holes on the side of the gear case.
I had tapped and inserted a plug into the extra oil passage in the lower unit thats needed when installing the new style lower on an older drive. Even if this was leaking, it would be much less than whats leaking out.
What seal could be leaking that is causing this ? Must be the in upper ?
Thank for any info.Last edited by inspectorlance; 06-09-2016 at 12:06 AM.

O-ring around the drive shaft bearing where the two halves go together most likely did not seal. Since you mention corrosion make sure the top half does not have any pin holes.
Lance I hope all is well with you.
