WTB Sportmaster for an 03 300x, RH 1.75:1 Fat
Maybe some opinions also, but I'm pretty sure I want a new gear case
(RH 1.75:1 Sporty Mercury Fat Shaft/Single Drive Shaft)
Anyone have one, or know the best place to buy a new one at a reasonable price?
So here’s where I could use a little insight.
I just fried my lower unit over Memorial weekend. Gears siezed and it sheared the drive shaft right at the splines going into the crank. Thank god for the cheapo $2.00 Harbor freight magnet. Stuck it up there and the little 1 inch chunk popped right out. Splines on the chunk seem to be fine.
But here’s the rest of the story:
Last Labor day, I seized a bearing, but I was literally only at an idle, so I took the risk rebuilding it. Guess it was a waste of money since the third time out after the rebuild it seized again. This time much more violently. I could hear the gears slamming around, and I felt the snap.
Now I’ve personally dealt with a number of blown motors, and I’ve never seen a negative impact on the lower unit. I have almost no experience with what could happen to a motor if a gear case seizes. Is there anything I need to worry about, any way to tell if the crank got damaged? The motor did not stall, I left it idling until the alarm finally went off due to no water pressure, maybe 1 minute, Then I shut it down.
So any ideas?
1. Anybody have or know where to go to get a gear case?
2. Any potential power head issues to be concerned about?

Must be something wrong with private messages. I sent a couple of replies to aggiestckl about a lower he wanted to sell, and I'm getting no response. Unless, did you change your mind aggiestckl?

Thanks, not interested in a rebuild. Mine was just rebuilt, and lasted 3 trips.

Okay that's odd. I'm getting PM's from others, but not you aggiestckl. Try this. dijunkmail@cox.net, and we can continue over email.
Thanks

Okay, so I'm getting a lot of requests to sell the old one. Please make an offer, I don't know what it's worth at this point. Here's most of the parts list for the 2/2016 rebuild that failed.

For those interested in the old case, here's the history:
Last Labor Day the upper drive shaft bearing seized as I was getting pulled over by a ranger. I was idling pulling up to their boat, when the motor died. That’s it. And yes, it was due to water intrusion. I changed the oil on July 4. Somehow blew a seal on Labor Day 2015. How bad? Not a drop of oil was in the thing. All water.
In February 2016 I had it rebuilt. All new bearings and seals. Gears seems to be okay, and confirmed that it was only the drive shaft bearing that went. See post above for parts list.
5/29 2016, It seized again on my last day, heading in. Just got through a no wake zone, punched it. In 2 seconds, something sounded weird, I felt a hesitation, then back to normal, and then 3 seconds later snap!!! The drive shaft sheared off at the splines. As far as I can tell, no bulges, and no water in the case. Just oil and metal shavings. The prop shaft spins, and the drive shaft is seized. When I try to turn it, I can feel metal munching inside. My guess is the guy who did the rebuild for me in 2/2016 did not set the back lash properly, or something like that. But he did pressure test, etc... No leaks, but something definitely failed inside.Last edited by us.patriot; 06-02-2016 at 12:36 PM.

I just order a new case with a one year warranty.... Could not see spending $3,000 to $4,400 and having no warranty.
