87 mariner 60hp stator and trigger readings-anything bust?
Hi all.. Ok so stuck in and endless loop with bust motor..
3cyl ran fine, then suddenly high speed miss came in, got worse and worse..
So I threw my stator into the fire today to burn off plastic!!
Plz tell me I didnt do this for nothing.. Found my red wire was shorting to the black ground.. Blue was not.. I assumed my stator was fried -
All my symptoms apparently point to high speed winding..
These are my trigger readings in ohms:
Purple to white: 1870
Purple to black 1160
Purple to br 2300
Bk to br 1180
Bk to wh 749
Wh to br 1900
Is my trigger OK?
Stator ohms:
Red to gnd (black) 141
Bl to gnd 11800 (made note of 6600..one of these cd be wrong)
Red to blue 11650
Can someone tell me / confirm the red short was an issue and i didnt destroy my stator for nothing? Also - how are my trigger readings?
thanks all!

I don't think you are checking that right. Here are the DVA and ohm charts. Mercury same as Mariner

hi thanks- but surely the red shorting to ground is a big issue.. so basically my stator was toast either way?
got some trigger specs from another site - 800-1400.. mine read as follows:
purple to white: 1922brown to black: 1218brown to white: 1950and they should all be 800-1400.. also ALL my wires in trigger short to each other except for purple to brown.. is it also toast or should these be connected? sorry - my electrical experience and knowledge is sub par

Yes you stator is junk now,I would not try rewiring it as that takes years of experience to do it right.
Not sure your model but trigger is usually checked with Black/white to brown,black/white to white, black/white to purple. Should be 800-1400 ohms.

Hi thanks - I only have purple, brown, white and black - reason im asking about the red shorting is because when I test the one im putting on I want to be sure my readings are correct -
Red should NOT short to ground ever right? the manual says no cont for the red (and blue) to ground test.. i assume thats no continuity?
Im trying to get confirmation whether the red short was an issue.
My trigger specs are supposedly:
800-1400 between purple / white (mine reads 1800),
800-1400 brown to black (mine reads 1200)..
is my trigger also shot now? and if so - can that be cos of the stator?
and will a 6 cyl trigger work on a 3 cyl? the part number is the same except for the last digit - my trigger # is 96454.. some cheap ones on ebay for $40 -
thanks!

Look on the switchbox where the black is connected. It should show blk/wht written on the pack. If it does then check the trigger like I posted.
