'08 Suburban noisy lifters
Have an 08 Suburban with a 5.3 AFM non-flex engine with 90,000 miles. Recently it has what sounds like a noisy lifter every once in a while..... not all the time. I keep up with the oil changes religiously and add Risolene every time. So the question here is, do I have bad lifters or could it just be a bad solenoid valve on the plate? I have googled this online and have seen responses of everything from using motor flush to almost a complete overhaul........ I have read where the AFM is nothing but trouble and shortens the life of the engine by gumming it up, others swear it's a great engine...... If this is a junk motor, I'd rather just cough up the $4k for a long block ($6700 installed by dealer) or just trade this in on a real truck....... As far as doing the work, I'm very capable of that, but don't want to waste time and money doing something that is not needed

If you had a 3/4 ton I would say swap a Duramax/Allison in it. Run it until you can't live with it or pull the top off now and fix it or do the long block but at 90k unless it's real hard mileage , lots of miles left in it. Surburbans are real .

my 2001 tahoe has 150000 miles and has a tap. Ive been told its just carbon and to ignore it which I have for the past 90000 miles. I also have a slight klunk on the 2 to 3rd up shift which I am told is very common.

Oh, and to add to the symptoms..... sometimes the traction control will shut off and the engine light will flash, have good oil pressure and temps through it all.....

Also remove the oil pressure sensor and check the screen underneath it, it filters the oil feeding the solenoid plate. The pressure sensor actually screws into the plate itself on AFM engines. I purchased the deviice that plugs into the DLC to disable the feature on my 2013 Tahoe, what a difference!

This truck is in great shape...... just put new tires on it, new battery and new shocks....... Tranny will slip in reverse if i don't give it enough time to engage (backing into a space real fast etc....) So, I'm at the point of where I need to fix it but don't want to be pulling heads if it just needs a VOLM

Check the o ring on the oil pump pick-up screen, we repair those systems quite often by replacing it. there are different ones depending on the year model. The leaking o ring causes the oil to become areated at times.

Is it when you first start the truck? A very common knocking noise is called "piston slap" by some and it's harmless. I had an 02 Tahoe with 170k miles sounded like a diesel when you first started and drove it cold, noise goes away in a minute. My current 04 Suburban with 190k miles 6.0 does a little tiny bit too. I've spoken to many people who have piston slap for 100s of thousands of miles on the Vortec engines.

These motors are bad about roller bearings on bottom of lifter going out. If check engine light is blinking means it's sensing a misfire. More than likely one of the lifters has failed and reducing valve lift. See what code is and if is for a particular cylinder, remove the valve cover for that cylinder and check the amount of lift on valves and if one is low there's your problem.

Interesting. My 05 Tahoe has started to have a lifter noise in it occasionally as well. I hate to mess with it cuz the thing runs so good. It has a little over 180000 miles.

Only engines with DOD system have this problem (2007 up). The 2005 probably just has lifter not staying primed which isn't that big of a deal. Wouldn't worry about it much unless noise just bothers you. And would only need lifters not cam and lifters.

Many non DOD engines tick on initial start up and extended hot idle due to the o ring leaking on the oil pump pick-up screen. We repair this quite often, it aerates the oil due to sucking air above the oil level.

old thread but a common problem still. wtsjr66 your correct on all points. The device to plug in to the OBD plug works but i think its better to get a real world tune and just turn it completely off, and you should get 30-35 more ponies w your tune. These new LS motors are damm good, seen a bunch w 300k runnin like a top, plus you can add close to 100hp w bolt ons and a tune, chevy has always catered to street racers w the ability to easily add horsepower. The Ecoboost Ford on the otherhand, now that they have been out awhile, is pretty much done at 100k, several of my buds started running into serious problems between 100-125k....Roost

I ended up pulling the motor and taking it apart, found a lifter skidded and the cam damaged. Put a non-DOD cam in it ('06), all standard lifters and sent the computer out to be programmed. New oil pump, soaked the pistons and rings in engine tuner and replaced all the seals. Sent the heads out for reconditioning for good measure. Put 15K on it since, runs great.
