    Break-in has begun!

Took the boat out for a couple hours yesterday. No high speed passes, just doing some breaking in on the new powerhead. We have had some severe storms moving through here the last week or so which means I can't hit the river and run for miles so I went to Cedar Creek Lake where I frequently fish. I was surprised at the amount of people on the lake and even more surprised to see the lake was 3-4 feet lower than normal. I didn't get the time spent out there like I wanted, but a couple hours is better than nothing I suppose.
I have a Sony Action cam on the cowling and a GoPro Hero3+ Silver that I put random locations. I hate that we make videos of our boats and can't hear the engine over the wind noise so I got an idea to try an external mic. I bought a 6 foot 1/8" stereo extension cable from RadioShack and just route the cable down the rigging tube. I had to drill a small hole in the bottom of the housing that the camera slides into and then tape it shut. I bought a couple Sony knock off 3.5mm stereo microphones on eBay (less than $6 ) and I am surprised at the sound quality from this cheap knock off, so much so that I am considering buying the genuine Sony mic that's nearly $70.

Is the Sony camera on a gyro or something? Seems pretty smooth compared to what the boats doing.

Sounds really sweet Slimm and love what you have done with the sound on the Video. Nothing worse than heaps of wind noise when all you really want to hear is the sweet sound of a nice engine on song. I wonder if any thing similar could be done with the GoPro?

It's directly to the top of the engine cowling, as center as I could get. I think I have the view set to medium instead of narrow or wide.

Yes you can use the exact same mic, the auction I won came with 2 for less than $6, you will need to get an adapter to go from the mini USB to female 1/8" stereo jack. You will also have to drill a small hole in the side of your housing to access the mini usb port on the side of the GoPro. I hate that these camera makers have such good quality video and just slap a mic in there place no thought in allowing for decent sound as if we're gonna sit it in the family room with it.

I assume the scratchy popping sound at idle is due to interference from the flywheel/magnets or coil packs. It was WAY worse when I wrapped the mic cable around the back of the engine cowling to get close to the exhaust. Oddly enough you couldn't hear anything over the bad interference. In this video I just used some cheap electrical tape to tape the mic to the rear deck where the fishing seat post goes in, trying to get it out of the wind as much as I could. I'll keep playing with that mic placement and eventually find a place for it, and hopefully get rid of the popping and crackling.
