    Cool ** Evinrude 1973 Full Catalog - View Here! **

    We'll go back to the early 1970s, when things began to accelerate with the big-horsepower wars. The V4 OMC engines were approaching their maximum [consumer market] potential with the 135-horsepower V4 Starflite. Electronic-assisted shifting was still in the feature set, as well as the early-design power trim-and-tilt, as well as the pre-BIA bolt pattern transom mount system that utilized separate transom brackets for adjusting the engine height.

    The starflight 115 is 99.6 ci and the starflight 85 is 92.6 both the same v4 configuration top speed on 115 is 50mph and the 85 43mph and 3 lbs weight difference. This is cool stuff.

    Actually, this was the first year of the BIA bolt patterns, replacing the old slip-in brackets. Had through-the-tilt-tube steering for the first time as well. The 85 and 115 pages in the catalog appears to possibly be pre-1973 engines with new cowlings. I had a '73 135 Johnson on a CV16 with the first gen power trim. I feel that engine was probably the strongest non-race V4 that OMC produced.
    Keep the old catalogs coming. Do you have the '66 Evinrude?

    BIA bolt pattern came from OMC I thought?

    The Years 72, 73 and 74 sure do bring back some memories don't they Smokey

    I was not 100% sure on when the BIA bolt pattern was introduced, but I did note in this particular catalog that they mentioned that the engines still featured the separate transom brackets for the V4 engines. That particular system was non-BIA compliant, right? I do have the 1966 catalog - I may have posted it already but I can certainly add it again. No problem

    Powerabout - you may be right on the shifting, but the catalog states "hydraulically-assisted mechanical shifting", as well as "Power-Pilot power-assisted shift". I realize that a hydraulic system by itself is not necessarily electric, but wasn't the electric shifting system in the earlier models hydraulic as well? I am not 100% sure though.

    I definitely enjoy this discussion. I would love to hear more history and details from you all.

    Here you go - the full boat chase scene, in HD. The actual stuntperson that drove the lead boat for that chase is a member here. I sat next to him (Tom Ireland) at one of the Mercury press events and talking to him was just awesome. He told me all about that scene, and how the lead boat actually crashed after landing, which is why the scene is cut so strangely at that part in the film.
    I especially like the very end of the scene, where the chase boat slides up the property and into the pool. So awesome!

    essentially the hydraulic pump in the gearbox remained but instead of being actuated by a plunger on the electric solenoids they used servo assisted piston on the mechanical shift rod.
    i thought both were great systems.
    i think the slip brackets actually had what became the bia standard?
