Blocking and sanding the boat to get ready for paint. In these pics, I spray a tracer coat of black over the yellow filler primer which is over the glass work. Then I block all the black off. Any spots that are low will retain the black tracer coat. That means that either I may need to sand more or I'll need to fill these low spots. The last pics show the low spots still needing filler.

Here, I block the rear of the transom first. Where the black line is shows me that my bodywork has left a straight line. The first pic shows how I use a VERY straight paint stick wraped with #220 grit wetsand paper to block the primer and trace coat. In the last pic, I taped out a rough "scallop" design that I may use on the paint job.

Very interesting Randy. Thank you for showing us the progress. I don't know how you developed all the skills you have, but what you can do with a boat and your rigging work is very nice. I was at Todd's shop for almost a whole day waiting for a wire transfer and I know he and his guys do a very good job laying up a boat. I was very impressed and he was nice enough to let me watch. If I ever do get one of these I want a heavy lay-up that is going to last the rest of my life. Not sure I will ever get another boat after the twin Shadow but who knows. I know I won't ever sell the Shadow.

Love the guide coat idea. Especially when on a white surface-white hides too many imprefections.

Always enjoy seeing the actual process to get these boats to the finished product. Scallop design has me picturing those color combos you mentioned.

I got the entire boat wet sanded today. It's still wet in these pics. That's why it's so shiny! I'll start taping tomorrow.

Scallops are cool and I'm sure you will make it look good, but don't you think they make the boat look dated? To me the lines of these just beg for a more modern design. I'd love to see you do a current style strip job on one of these. But that's just my .02

Tom, I block primer with 220 grit. They go over it with 320 grit, then I DA sand the whole boat with 400 grit, then I wet sand the whole boat with 400 grit. Never sand with finer unless you are doing a paint blend. You need the 400 grit to insure adhesion and no peeling.

I know scallops are old school, but the last five Liberators that I sold went to guys 58-74 years old! Most older guys don't like the crazy stuff. However, that last yellow and orange one I did with the purple lightning seemed to be popular with everyone. I guess younger guys haven't got the $$$. I'll paint any design that a customer wants! I'm still open to other designs. Tomorrow the whole boat will get painted with a high metallic silver with silver flake. All the graphics will go on next week.

    Randy, looking good!
IMPO, with a 22' boat less paint/graphic work is better. Simplicity goes along way.......

I think I figured it out. The tape job Randy has on the boat bears a resemblance to the maker Screaming Eagle Boats. Did I get it semi correct Randy? Looks like the tip of an eagles wing maybe??? My Bill of Sale from when I bought Todd's Cougar had a logo on it that kinda made me think that. It is in my safe and I hace not looked at it for months but when I looked at your last pics it hit me. I could be wrong but you never know right.
