"A football field per second"
In 1990 near Fort Stockton, Texas.
On a 7.712 mile track with no fences to keep wild animals from straying into the path of a car, a group of eight drivers pushed two Corvettes day and night, through intermittent drizzle, snow, and fog at an average of 175.710 mph, into history.
The distance equals going from Los Angeles to Atlanta and back to LA in 24 hours.

The 1990-’95 production Corvette ZR1 was the 5.7-liter LT5—engineered by GM and Lotus, then machined and assembled by Mercury Marine’s MerCruiser division in Stillwater, Oklahoma. A gutsy 405 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. Many of the LT5’s innovations are common now, but they were revolutionary in the 1990s.
The heads and block were cast aluminum machined and assembled by MerCruiser. The block was two pieces: an upper case for the cylinders and a lower case for the crankshaft and mains.

A tour of Corvette ZR1 engine at the Mercury Marine Plant in Oklahoma.
In this video we are informed, that GM teamed up with Mercury Marine, because of the lower volume needed in building the LT-5 engines.
Apparently it was not economical viable for GM to build engines at the lower volume per week.
