An overall speed increase 0f 8.5% (by the winner) over the previous winner's time,
is substantial relative to modern day racing (in any professional racing league)
A golden era of Outboard Racing taking leaps in speed, due mainly to engine development and hull improvements.

We made the con rods for the 482's at Merc Plant 4. One operation was hand sanding the I beam longitudely, removing any left over forging marks or stress risers. One night one of the operators though he found a quicker way to sand them, he went across the I beam instead of the long way - took so much stock off we had to scrap a crap load of rods and start a batch from scratch, including getting new forgings from the vendor. Don't remember what happened to the employee, protected by the union so probably just a stike in the book.

"My Way" cowboys are not tolerated in this day and age. It's cool to experiment to find a better way, but it takes consensus of operators, technicians, engineers, QC and management to streamline processes. Be satisfied that at least Mercury still makes stuff themselves rather than parcel out on a sub contract. My ProXS V8 control binnacle came from South Korea?
