Mercury Through The Years...

This was built by the folks at Plt 6 in Oshkosh. Elmer Croissant was the engineer in charge of this design. It was built for the aborted "flying boat" speed record attempt headed by Dr. Lippich.

I think it was late 1968, I happened to go down to Lake X when they were messin' with that project. I watched them crash a model of the boat, that really disappointed the troops.

Dick Lanpheer said that several of these were built, very expensive.

That clearly explains this one with the skeg, but not the earlier ones without the skeg that appear to be under 76 cubic inch motors - which would imply 1961 or 1962

...this units use/viability was again "tested" in the early seventies at the X. just a guess.

As faras I know, Elmer Nord was chosen to be pilot. As I heard the story he got moving across the Lake and the thing took off. Elmer still brags he holds the altitude record at Lake X.
