    Had one weakness. When used on motor with the big gear case ( 850, 1500) they would break if you tried to put it in reverse without the motor running. If the reverse dogs weren't lined up the little tooth on part #40could shear off.

    What year did Mercury discontinue the 44ci motors? I have been told that the later year motors were different from the motors I am familiar with. Also what years did they build the 44xs.

    ...likewise... but maybe it was just because I can't remember seeing the need to ever shift into reverse with the engines not running? that was a while ago though, what the hell do I know?!

    The 44 ci motor. That was a warhorse, and proberly Mercs best motor ever.

    Last time I checked Speedmasters didn't have reverse.

    so Merc had years to do it right and Yam must have said DOH lets do it first its so obvious..
