Before low water pickups came stock on the lower units the guys running the inline 6s had problems with not enough water around the top two cylinders. I managed to avoid this issue by only running 4 or occasionally 3 cylinder motors. You would have thought that Mercury with their experience on Quicksilver and Speedmaster units would have done the low pickups a long time ago.

Yes the speed record set ups often used a rudder and had the skeg cut off. The 75H style unit I got from the Charlie Wicks (Wix filters Charlie Wicks) collection had the skeg cut off and a new one welded on.

Does anybody have photos of the pneumatic brake rods that Mercury briefly used in 1974 / 75 or so? Heard a lot of stories about them but never have seen photos. I know Mercury was quite secretive about them and they caught the OMC teams completely off guard.
