    ...mercruiser brochure photo. possibly to promote the underwater thru-prop exhaust feature, that other sterndrives did not have. that thru-transom exhaust, as was on a lot of the small donzi's, like this little 16, is simply an option? not really a good idea to run a drive like this normally though, as the input shaft & u-joint assembly is always spinning, even while simply in neutral, and can nick the rubber bellows...
