Mirage Jaguar Ski Racer setup
I'm picking up a Mirage Jaguar Ski Racer with a 2.4 EFI Bridgeport this week. The motor has been rebuilt and has about 30 hours on it. All I really want out of this boat is about 90mph. I am looking at selling the Bridgeport. What HP motor would consistently and reliably push this boat to about 90?
I could put on a Merc ProMax 200 or 225 but would like a motor to be a little more fuel efficient. Would a small block ETEC 200 or an Optimax 200 be an option for this boat? Or are those motors too heavy for this boat? A Merc 200XS ROS would be the ultimate but is more $$ than I want to spend. Any options or ideas to share would be great.

Wouldn't the big block HO be too heavy? Reason why I ask is I had a Hydrostream Vegas XT with the ETEC 200HO on it and it was way too azz heavy. The small block ETEC 200 is probably about 100 lbs lighter than the HO and the tunnel wouldn't need the big torque of the HO to fly. Plus I'm a little nervous about having the nose run too high on a tunnel. I've already been over backwards once in an STV, don't want to do it again.

my other boat i have is also a mirage but its the 3 seat version and a LOT LIGHTER layup than our "ski racer" 4 seat. the 4 seat has subwoofer/stereo and the 3 seat version has a tach, trim, lightweight battery and we are running a 3.4 liter 250 on it. NO PROBLEMS.... these boats can handle the weight its not like an allison or anything.

To hit around 90, would an ETEC 150HO, ETEC 200 small block, or Mercury 175 Pro XS be an option? They are all lower in weight, would get good fuel economy, but are they capable of the 90 mark?

With the 3.4 1.62 sporty I get 6-7mpg at 90. 28 gals goes a long way. We did a 105 mile lunch run on the St. John's I burnt 13 gals my brothers carb 3.3 burnt 25.
I have a a cut 36 bravo looks more like a hydromotive now. We ran it on my buddy's t3 with a 16" 250ficht we put a 1.62 sporty under it and went 110.8 25psi water pressure. Could move motor up but ran out of daylight but mid teens are in reach. not bad for a 87 octane box stock 242hp Ficht Powerhead.

So I'm starting to think Mercury Pro XS 175 is the way to go. Local dealer would swap standard lower unit with new Sportmaster and cut me a good deal on both. Is a realistic expectation 90 with correct setup?

36P seems a little steep for a stock 200 .... i know on my 350 lb kevlar daytona my modified 2.4 wont turn anything to the rev limiter past a 32P. Might just be the amount of beer i have in the back of the boat plus the weight of the GF. Who knows.

Take a very tall prop for a 175 to get 90 on your setup.

The information I got from Simon Motorsports is that with the ECU upgrade on the Pro XS 175 is that they raise the rev limiter from 6000 to 6800rpm's and the upgrade generates 15-20hp. So if the stock 175 puts out around 190hp then the ECU upgrade would put that motor at 205-210hp. I would think with that hp I would be able to generate some 90mph passes and have the benefit of the lighter 2.5 block. They quoted me at $650 for the ECU upgrade. There is a flywheel upgrade that they recommend as well. I believe that was around $300-400. This is sounding like the direction I will be going.

Like BB18 said, It'll require a 30 pitch prop to get to 90 (10% slip) but I don't think you can get the 175 or 205-210 to turn a tall prop 6,800. It's going to take a good distance to turn it up. I'm a Mercury man but they just don't have the torque the E-Tec's do.
