Cool Stepping into the Unknown... 300X

I am looking at a 21' Daytona Eliminator hull with a 1998 3.0L 300 Merc with Sportmaster big shaft gear case, Yammy prop and it looks really clean.

On a tandem axle trailer, all white, no BS graphics... what would you all think the value of this boat would be..?

The hull is the center-pad hull... seems to ride smooth, no drama. Might be a good cruising boat, definitely not a racer.

Thoughts? Any drawbacks to the 3.0L 300? Things to look for?

    Thanks!!!!

Didn't think they made an X motor in 98? Should be a promax 300.

The 300 3 litre Promax smokes a little, burns a lot of fuel, and is probably the most reliable Merc built. (with good maintenance they have gone 800 hrs.)

I built my daughter a 21 Daytona and put a stock 200 w/ low water pickups. With a very conservative setup the boat easily runs in the 70s gps....I would think with the 300 Promax you could see high 80s- low 90s and have a very reliable & stable ride. they are really well built boats, but check the transom on a boat of that age....Click image for larger version.

I just sold a 21 Daytona with a 300 promax hung on the back.
1 1/2 up of the pad on the rev limiter spinning a 30 pitch offshore cut chopper 2 saw consistent 99-101 with 30 gallons and 2 people
loved the promax just ate fuel and heck yea they smoke a bit more than the 300x
value the hull rigged complete nice gauges hydraulic helm on a good trailer around 5500.00 +/-
the promax complete depending on hours and condition with compression and leakdown as well a physical appearance could bring 8k .
    sounds like a 11-13k setup ???
funny tho broken apart seems to always net more money than a complete boat...IMO.

Today I went to look at this boat. Looks nice, needs a little TLC but all in all, might be a good deal. The boat as a completely new gelcoat top to bottom, new polished dual 25 gal tanks and a stout transom with a custom interior support aluminum bracket. The original owner was going to hang twins off the back but then decided upon a 300 Promax.

So here are a few concerns...

    1) The boat needs a rubrail. The gelcoat is beautiful on the top, no waves and very smooth... but the rail was never replaced. I have Google searched all over, but not finding much luck to find a proper looking rail.

    2) The owner states he premixes his fuel/oil. The oil tank and system is still there and hooked up... he just chooses to make it right in the tank. Should I hook the system up or just use it instead of pre-mix?

    3) New alternator

    4) has a 32" four blade... not sure of the make but looks nice.

    5) It looks like the engine is set on the top hole on the Eliminator setback bracket... I have seen many others on here that add another 3-5" of setback and more height. I am thinking that removing that system and installing a Porta-Lift like I have on the flats boat would be much better and more versatile.

I couldn't find any soft spots... but I HATE the seats in it. It has the typical jet boat low back seats. I would love to find something more late model and modern. Any suggestions?

    THANKS!!!

You can get the rub rail used on the boat from Taco...I put a new insert on ours. properly remove the oil pump, drive gear, tank, check valve & plug it all. The 98 300 promax uses a mechanical pump with plastic drive gear (like the 2.5s) and it is suspect as it ages. The 300X with the electronic pump and case oil injection works great.

    Lower Unit??

Which Lower Unit is this? It does not look like any Sportmaster I have ever seen but the receipts from the dealer show it as one.

    THANKS!

Looks like a 3.0L sporty with some funky skeg shaping...trailing edge of the skeg should be straight up and down

    Cool All In...

Well I wanted an Allison Excel, had an STV ModVP and now I think this Eliminator Daytona 21 will fill a few smiles on the rougher lakes like Murray and Lanier. I just have to get the setup right cause this boat is missing the mark. First test ride shows that the motor is plenty strong with tons of torque... this is my first 300 ProMax and the midrange is off the hook! The bow flies way too high and I know the motor is too low and not far back enough. Where is the sweet spot on flying these boats to get the motor right? Would a 3-blade cleaver be better? Maybe a 15x32?

    Thoughts, suggestions and comments welcome!

I had this model eliminator! look at a few posts up in this thread

    same motor
same lower (less the funny homemade torque tab)
    same setback about 8"
1 1/4" to 1 1/2 up of the pad with the motor shaft centerline set level with pad

no cleavers really dont work well Imo.
chopperII 30 worked to 32 with some cup
or an offshore cut chopper I
also like spinelli 32 but had a little to much transom walk at top end kinda sketchy
    also liked merc drag4 30 and 32
    mazcos werent the winners either...

The transom in this boat is new and also features a cross-bolted, welded substructure as the original owner was building the boat for twin 2.5L 260s when he scored the deal for the 300 Promax. I think if set up right, this boat could definitely fly but it needs to be controllable which is why I am more concerned with the setup over usable power right now. The prop is definitely a concern and I am welcome to any suggestions. Is there a happy medium between the Mazco I have and something that will have more stern lift? This 32 RE4 has tremendous midrange grip and from 40+ mph the boat simply pulls hard to 85 which is where I shut it down because the nose was wanting to fly so high even trying to trim it in.
