    On that particular motor you are probably correct. Looks like an antique loaded for bear and there is probably a good chance of projectiles at some point. Maybe he just wants to protect his cowling.

    Kinda what I was thinking .. maybe it's not even welded ...

    If it was for "future" ballistic purposes , wouldn't the front half and flywheel be more of a concern .. ?

    Mercury needed that on the inside for there inline cowls back in the day. Some Mercury drivers took one of the multi engine offshore boats up to Fremont for test run and lunch in the fall. They cut thru weed beds out side of Winneconne. Got in wolf river towards Fremont and engines where missing and running rough? Stopped for lunch and engines wouldn't start to go back. Looked at cowls and they where full of duck shot holes. They forgot it was hunting season and buzzed the duck blinds in the weed beds, whoops. They had to get it trailered back to Mercury.
