    Baja 16ss

I'm new to the site and have already found lots of good info here. I bought a 1979 Baja 16ss with a Johnson 100HP last weekend. It's super clean and a lotof fun to drive so far but I'm looking for ideas on customizing and of course ways to get more top end speed out of it. I think I want to start with a prop. What kind of speed can I expect to get out of a 100HP? Post some pics of yourBaja's and what you've done to them. Thanks in advance.

I bought one of these new in '79. Mine was minus the railings and the windshield. Had it for several years. Really liked the boat. It was kinda heavy-ish for a 16 footer, but that plus a good hull design meant it took chop better than most 16 footers. I had little kids at the time, and it had a nice, deep cabin area. I had a 150 short shaft and a 2-blade 26" elephant-ear prop on it, it had a pad and it would get up and move if you had room to wind it out. It would push 70 if everything were right. With a 100, I would expect mid-upper 40's.

Wow!!! 70 would be moving pretty good in this little thing. You're right, the boat handles great. I thought it was gonna be a rough ride until i got it in the water. I've only had it out once and it ran 45 mph on gps with two adults in it. I'd love to squeeze mid 50's out of this 100 hp. I'm hoping some guys will chime in and give me some good free advice.

Is Joe Ward still boating? I knew him back in the mid eightys. Then I heard he wrecked pretty bad not long ago.

Thats a cool little boat, I grew up with a guy here in new york that had one with a 110 evinrude on it we took it for a long sunday drive in a very busy water way jumping boat wakes etc. and separated the deck from the hull and nearly sank it. Was bullet proof after through bolting it back together.

Joe passed about 2 years back, rip. back in the late 70s , we had a fastboat friend that had a marina near lake tarpon, he carried baja ,sterling & also was a merc dealer ,joe, his brother bobby & i got great deals on new 16 ss bajas, i put a 175 merc on mine on a 5 inch jackboard no setback, ran a 26 chopper, solid motormounts ,dixycup nosecone on the otherwise stock 1.78 lu, would run very well probably hi 70s to low 80s & handled good ,no gps back then .later joe got a 15 ss , he later put a 245 on it ,ran 104 verified by stalker 1 radar gun,on rails .allways rode very flat on the keel.i have videos .. somewhere. we did alot of baja running back in the day , very nice boat slimdd, looks to be in very well kept condition, good luck with it !

I heard he wrecked real bad and a bunch of people got together to do work on his house while he was recovering, Would love to see those videos are they from lake tarpon? any from 84 85 era? I might be in them I had a 20 foot action with a 2.6 xp on it.

I had a 170ss for 5 years with a built 200 as you guys would say "fishing motor" and it ran 76 GPS. Sounds like you have a fun boat and 70 is great for your current fuel consumption.

How much more do you want to spend to go faster with that boat? COnsider your options. I broke my 170ss as well on 4 footers racing all the people who had fast boats on the lake. My anchor flew out in the roughest water and I lost it. I don't miss those days.

Yea, I'd Like To See Those Videos Too.

I'm Not Wanting To Spend A Lot To Go Fast. I'd Love To See It Go 55 But The Boat Is So Clean For It's Age That I Don't Want To Do Too Much To it. I'm New To This So I Don't Know What To Expect With Prop Changes And Other Options.

I have an 84 Baja 16SS. I bought it from John Tiger (name dropping) with a 100 Johnson GT. 55.6 GPS with a 23 SRX. One or two mph slower with a 21 Renegade. Both props worked by DAH.

4" rapid jack. Engine height didn't matter much, +/- an inch had minimal affect on speed.

3 years ago, my 2 brother's and I split the cost of a new Evinrude Etec 115 HO, and that motor is still on it. I got it up to 64 with over hub props before I lost interest in going fast in my Baja (I have another faster boat). I've never adjusted engine height with the 115.

I've used the DAH 23 SRX exactly twice, once on the 100 and once on the 115. PM me if you want to buy it.

Fun little boat. It's mostly used for water skiing now, with the occasional boat tour (lake/lock/river system).

2.5=21, the videos were 1995,96 and later & were taken with a camera i no longer have so i cant view ,. joe really never fully recovered from his last boating accident as his lungs were in bad shape for several years. he scared the **** out of us when he drove his 15 baja or his allison ! in 1985 joe had a silver flake baja 16 ,he was a daredevel for sure.we may know each other as i have boated on tarpon since 1969 & have lived on the lake since 1983. in 85 thru 88 i ran on the lake daily with a blue & silver flake hydrostream vector with a 2.4.good times & memorys! was your action blue?
