Your right about motivation, I want to drop my boat in now as is haha. Great vid, I love the shots of the prop surfacing. I'll tell ya those YT hulls are no joke, full interior and your still seeing 104 mph.

FYI. Over the years, I've designed and built more than a few boats. Mostly commercial workboats and a variety of recreational fishing boats. I've also done a bunch of recore, re-stringer re-transoming and redecking jobs.

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I started with polyester resin because that's what everybody used. Got the chance to use epoxy 20 years ago for a top-shelf customer and the difference between polyester and epoxy resins is night and day.

    Epoxy:

    - is more tolerant of temperature variations
    - has much more adjustable cure times to aid in coring and laminating without rushing
    - has a longer shelf life
    - has less critical mixing ratios
    - is significantly and provably stronger
    - and most importantly, is for all intents and purposes waterproof, something polyester is clearly not.

Used to be that epoxy resin was prohibitively expensive. Name brand stuff still is. However, there are some reliable distributors that now have epoxy resin at quite reasonable prices.

The best distributor I've worked with is RAKA in Fl. They have a line of laminating resins and hardeners that are affordable and adjustable. They have three different viscosity resins and three different speed hardeners. And you can mix and match to get just the product you need. They mix 2 to 1. The current price for 6 catalized gallons - 4 gal. resin and 2 gal. hardener - is about $310 with $25 shipping. Can't beat that. I've been using their products for about 5 years and have been very satisfied. Plus they are a small company so it's easy to get someone on the phone if/when you need to.

Recoring and re-transoming is a nasty job. Just a suggestion, but if I were you, I would seriously consider upgrading to a full epoxy job. Price isn't that bad and the results will be superior.

    Just my $0.02

Wow, you know your resins. Thank you for the info. Soon after I ordered all my polyresin I started hearing more and more about the epoxy. I also hear one of the added bonuses to doing it in a garage as it does not stink the place up as bad. With the price I spent it's too late for me to switch over now but in the future I will definitely consider it. Thanks again for the info, that's why screamandfly is the best.

I am in the process of recoring my YT and I am planning removing the foam out of the sponsons and recoring them . Has anyone run them with reinstalling the foam. I was planning on adding some ribs to reinforce the tunnels and support the top deck.

    Thanks Bob

Thanks Brian for the picture's, that will give me more of a idea of what you did for reinforcement's. I got the rest of center ground up today and ready for the core. I am planning on getting all the core in center to keep everything strait before I tackle the sponsons.

No foam. Just recore the sponsons and leave them open while adding drain plugs.

Bob, I'm not done with mine yet but I plan on adding ribs in the sponsons, no foam and keeping them open. I want to see everything going on in my boat..... No more mystery's for me. I started making my cardboard rib templates, than plan on doing something nice like Brian did.

Add a hole where that bulkhead meets the hull, you don't want water getting in an not able to drain. I just picked up an 86 Valero YT so I'm subscribed. I've done a core job before but this is my first tunnel type hull. Keep at it!

Here is the start of the sponson ribs.... I left a 45deg cut in the lower corner for a drain. (can't see it in the pics) I also solved my problem of how to screw my deck "wings" back into the hull, since I will be running with no floor. Can't wait to clean this dusty mess up and start glassing.

Bob, your hull is looking great, cleaned up much better than mine did. Hopefully the sponsons will be the same for you, keep the pics coming.
