ID:	325624Has anyone even seen anything like this? i started to do the core in my YT the other day, the core on the sides of the pad came up no problem and was the normal rotted end grain balsa. But when i began trying to remove the core in the pad, i noticed extremely thick glass on top of plywood cut into strips on top of another 1/2 of glass..... no balsa in the pad (unless its under the plywood) which at this point wouldn't surprise me. i don't know why someone would ever do this haha... any ideas? the core in this thing must weigh 50lb with all that glass and plywood planking. its going to be hell to remove.

Erik, has this boat ever had hull work on it before? I know a number of YTs went back to Hydrostream in the early days of that design for warranty work. Not saying that's related to this, but it's possible the hull has been worked on before - and - Hydrostream's build quality and methods have varied somewhat, quite often too.

I would definitely like to see photos as you progress with it! I had a Valero YT and I always loved that hull design, except that it could spray you in the face sometimes at lower speed in chop!

Hi Greg, thanks for the response , i know this boat was upside down at one point and the hull was blueprinted and coated in graphite. although it was a surprise to me finding this pad set up..... i will say it is unbelievably solid. i wonder if this could have been one of those returned YT's your talking about. I don't think this core was ever touched since Hydrostream. That's the best pic I could get at the moment...( ignore my hacked up trailer bunks) Valero YT's are awesome looking boats as well. we need to keep these boats alive

my 1970 13' Allison had plywood srips in the pad. From the transom fwd about 3 feet. The rest of the bottom was balsa core and all of it was original from the factory.
    its all balsa now

okay guys, i know i sound crazy......but. This plywood planking was actually done very well, and is surprisingly dry as a bone. i spent about an hour removing only 2 inches of it. i am wondering if i shouldn't just leave this pad section alone. i thought for sure that removing it was best, but now that i am tearing into it.... its is so solid, i feel i shouldn't mess with a good thing. i will use balsa up the sides of the pad and in the bow for sure though. Any thoughts? you guys have been very helpful.

That is very strange. I've never seen anything like that before. I would hesitate to think Hydrostream did that.

I would leave it. You might mess up the pad trying to remove it. I'm sure it strong as hell. 3ft can't be too heavy. My old friend who has redone many cored boats, always did them lake this in the pad.

Thanks guys, that's what i needed to hear. i'm afraid of punching through the hull trying to remove it.. it was done very well, i'm thinking it could have something to do with the pad being blueprinted in the past. The more of the old balsa i remove the more i see how nice this job was done. (the glass was only thick in front of the planking under the balsa) this pad must be bullet proof, and it is not nearly as heavy as i thought it was at first.

    Erik,
I had to dig way back for the pic but found a shot of my yt pad and the repair they did to it..
As you can see the core failed and while i think whom ever fixed it had no way of getting balsa core they went the way of building up many layers of glass..This I could have left and worked around it with new core but said nope no way im in here and its time to do it right..Well something like 20hrs latter it was out and gone..The probs with the pads in the yts is they will crack open the sides once the core is wetted out..So once I was back to the out hull I was able the lay out a new sheet of glass to build the pad strength back up before bedding in new balsa core from Merton Glass..Here's my pic...

Wow, that's a lot of Glass Brian... I feel your pain with all the sanding and grinding. you really did a unbelievable job on that boat. if my pad wasn't completely dry, with no sign of ever being wet, I would never even think of leaving it in..... I have some real thinking to do.
do you have any pics of your gutted out sponsons?
