Lets talk pads...
I am trying to learn how different pads drive and handle. So let us assume for sake of simplicity, we have a 17' bass boat and this bass boat has the ability to magically change the pad shape/design. Can someone help me understand how each of these pads would affect the performance and handling of this boat?
P.S. I am NOT an artist nor do I excel at Mechanical Desktop or AutoCAD etc so paint had to work.
P.P.S. If this needs to be in technical or some other place please move it as you see fit...

I have driven most of those pad designs. They by themselves will not make a noticeable difference. The whole hull strake combo and balance will make more of a diff than just the pad shape alone. Pad width is another story however....

A great big chunk of handling and speed, of a pad V are the aerodynamics of the hull it is attached to!! As with most pieces of hi performing machinery its the sum of all the parts working together that makes a standout.

This is my boat, I have been thinking on how I could improve the performance and maybe pick up some MPH. I REALLY want an XB2002 but have come to the realization that it isn't gonna happen, at least anytime soon so I want to make the most of what I have. I have often wondered why they chose this design of pad versus one of the others, and at the same time considered the possibility that with the first hand experience and technology we have today that I may be able (with the help from the friends I have made on these forums) to improve on my ole bass boat and be able to keep up with some of you guys and those fast a$$ boats you drive.

I'd love to try a tunnel. Angie and I have talked about me doing an STV or Mirage so we could just go river riding and site seeing. I have a 25 yr old son that loves getting out and riding and he is somewhat of a HP nut, Angie has a 14 and a 20 yr old daughters. The 14yr old will beat us to the boat if she hears us talking about a ride...the 20 yr old just wants to sit and watch UNreality tv. It would be nice to have room for us to just ride comfortable and not worry about keeping balanced on a pad and other boats wakes etc.

Slimm My cvx17 has the same small vpad as yours----very prone to chine-walkin if everything isn't tight! Took me a little time to get it right including NOT too much trim!!! just my experience. Gary

Turning the boat right side up should provide a substantial performance increase
I'd rather see you pour on the horsepower before messing with the bottom. To me, the "risk/reward ratio" is poor. A good bottom mod might pick up a couple mph, but if you calculate wrong you could easily ruin the hull. As has been stated, the pad works in combination with other hull features to obtain the proper performance and handling.Living in the Freedom provided by Bud Conner and his fellow warriors.

Any pad should be sized for the unique hull design/setup. What works for one hull doesn't necessarily work for another.Last edited by Jimboat; 08-16-2015 at 07:33 AM.

That is my current hull, a 1977 Cobra Phantom and it is 17' in length. This picture was taken last spring when it was upside down after painting the bottom. .
The transom only appears notched in this picture I think due to lighting. The area where the side stripes start actually swoops forward to meet the gunwell.
The pad is 10" wide at the drain plug. The vee on my pad is like 'B' in my illustration, very shallow vee but definitely not flat. The edges are a little rounded off, especially noticeable on the back edge of the pad.
Since I did all this work on the boat I have regretted not squaring up the sides and edges of the pad better, as well as wishing I would have made the pad perfectly flat. Since it is a bass boat and I use it for fishing mostly I think the flat pad will help lift a little better. The entire package fully tournament loaded with 19gals fuel weighs in right at 1650-1700 lbs. I know it's heavy compared to what everyone else is using but compared to newer bass boats fully loaded I think I am doing ok.
