I collect mid year corvettes, the parts manager at the lake was also an enthusiast of the 63-67 cars. He set up a visit for my wife and myself and we drove our 66 convertible over from Daytona during the Turkey Rod Run about 18 years ago. The plant manager took us on a guided tour of the plant, we were able to look at all the historic buildings and structures. Also checked out all the working buildings and visited with a lot of the employees, it was a busy place back then.

Lots of fun times at the Lake. Lots of funny stories too. One in particular, in 2002 we conducted a Bass & Walleye Boats engine shootout, 250s on Stratos bass boats. It was in December and poured the entire time we were there, letting up only briefly enough for us to get the boats run. We had Gordy Montague there to dyno the engines. When it became apparent we just couldn't do the dyno work in the pouring rain, Merc allowed us into the Lake to do it there. Robert Moore told us that to his knowledge we were the first ever allowed in the Lake with competitor engines for a purpose other than Mercury testing. We did the dyno work with the boats and engines in the water, at the docks, under the shelter. It worked out perfectly. The Merc guys all had their doubts about Gordy and his L & S dyno, but he efficiently went about his work and produced the #s, and the results were consistent. That silenced their doubts for good.
