    225ho etec

What's the word on the street with the 2014's 225 ho motors?

What is the reliability like on these rudes?

I see they have a low water pickup stock??

Good reliability and yes, the have low water pickups in the nose of the gearcase.

There are no 2014 models. Since after 2012 production, Evinrude joined Merc and Yamaha in eliminating model years. Everything is by model number only.

The low water pickups only work as low water water pickups if the side ones are blocked off. If the side ones come out, you lose water pressure. Basically they only work as alternate water pickups

The 3.3L 225HO motors have been in production since 2005, they've seen some minor changes but are pretty darn refined at this point (they were reliable has hell when they came out and only gettin better). If your planning on running one of these motors on a really fast performance application, things like solid motor mounts and noseconed lower are somethings that need to be looked into...

What about lower unit gear? Mercury has the best gear ratio for high speed applications?

Do not know the specifics of this motor except that the mid-section has been modified for the exhaust outlet.

We have a 115 HO. Quiet, powerful, easy on gas. We love it. I'd buy a bigger one in a heartbeat, unless I planned on surfacing the gearcase. Then I'd think hard about Merc.
