    300xs - Temp Warning Alarm

    I have twin 300xs on my Daytona 22'. I am running the prop center line 1 5/8" above and I am getting a temperature alarm above 160 degrees. I initially thought it had to do with the compressor, so I re-located air compressor intake and filter the air through valve cover filter.

    I remember seeing something about relocating the air temp sensor. Does anyone have have those instructions, along with what it accomplishes?

    The motors run great, no fault codes are showing up.

    That is way too hot somethings wrong. Filter on port side of block might need to be cleaned. This feeds the compressor it's water. Follow the compressor water feed line down to it. Remove it and clear the debris, 3/4'' wrench and a new ty-wrap and that's it.

    I should clarify, the temperature is 125 or below when running midrange or less.

    The warning pops up on the vessel view after running wide open for about a minute. I back off and the temperature comes right back down.

    Water pressures are best in midrange, 15 psi or better. The pressure drops off in the upper ranges.

    That's your problem.... losing water pressure.... might have to block off the upper water pickup holes in the side of the gearcase or lower the motor.....

    might also need an impeller by now from sucking air..............

    Those comp. strainers still have to be cleaned occasionally. Regular maint. type thing.

    Don't move the air temp sensor! That mod is only for DBR ECU flash. You have a water problem. You need at least 10# water pressure at WOT.

    The boat runs great with the sport master gear cases mounted 1 5/8" above or higher, I just loose water pressure. I have been reluctant to add remote water pickups but that might be next.

    Has anyone cut ramps into the bottom of the hull to increase the water flow to the gearcase water pickup?

    Also I have notice that I can add positive trim and this helps a little. I am guessing that adding positive trim buries the transom and lifts the bow, but I would rather keep the prop angle pretty neutral or parallel with the bottom of the boat.

    jpf, I have ramps on my Skater, from the factory. I run my cases 1 7/8" above with good water pressure with a bit of negative trim as top speed. I'll try to post a photo of them when I go to my boat house today. Check-out OSO, outboard Skater thread. I think that I recall someone posting the ramp photos on there.

    Thanks David, I would love to see pictures. I am thinking I can cut a ramp about 1 to 1 1/2" wide and about 1/4" deep, without having to modify or do much fiberglass work. I have never seen ramps, but to me it sounds promising, there is a lot of water pressure at the transom, if I can get that water directed at the water pickup, it should help.

    XstreamViking, I am tracing all the water lines for obstructions and flow. You comments make me think about that. The engines have 40 hours on them, so I was't too worried about clogging, but I haven't checked, I will now.

    IF you run in clean, deep water they prob won't need cleaning at 40 hrs. Get in some weeds or stir up some shells in the shallows, and it will need cleaning often. Here in fla I clean mine all the time....

    The 1 5/8" height is starting to get on the high side for stock pickup. Not impossible, but beginning.

    If you own a Go-pro or similar camera, mount it on the transom aimed at the gearcase and it will tell the story. You are close on your trim theory, but it is actually the gearcase's relationship to the water to take into consideration, not the boat. When you are running at negative trim, you are using the bottom of the torpedo like a sled, with the tip (where the water pickups are) in the air. Video will support this. When you move trim positive, you rocker the gearcase to start burying the nose. This adds water, but increases wetted surface area, and potentially scrubs speed. Another thing to take into consideration is that the propeller rake affects the trim angle needed to run, as well.

    I'd certainly consider doing the gearcase water inlet mod that you referred to from OSO. The new 400R Verado Sporty case has similar mods. With where your height is, this might just do the trick. Sooner or later you are going to run out of water and want the remote pickups, but the inlet mod might be just the ticket for where you are at right now.

    Get that camera footage and post it, if you can.

    All the other comments on keeping the compressor water feed healthy are spot on, as well. The compressor dump fitting at the cowl is the smallest hole in the system, so it can collect shells and seaweed that will pass everywhere else.

    I will get some video. I have wanted to video the gearcases for quite a while, but just get busy once we get out on the water.

    here is a 110 mph pass, the boat was still accelerating real good, but the warning popped up on the vessel view so I backed out to see what was going on.

    I shot this with my Contour +2, still trying to figure out why it isn't in HD and why GPS and Google Mapping isn't displayed. Still learning.
