Mercury vs Mariner

I know that Mercury and Mariner are IDENTICAL, BUT how are they identified just by looking at the powerheads? Are Mercury block/heads black and Mariner block/heads gray?? Is that how it works? I've always liked Mariner alien cowlings because of their uniqueness AND it would better match the boat too

I have a Mariner 300 Super Magnum.
The power head is black and it says "300 Pro Max" on the ignition boxes.

My Drag 300 is NUDE , the only difference is the packaging , out side grey or black,

No difference under the cowl whatsoever. Only the stickers and colour of exterior are different.
However, if you boat in a really hot environment I've heard the mariners may perform slightly better due to the fact the silver cowls don't absorb so much heat!

when tha "clamshell" went away ALL production V6 blocks/power heads went black...

I heard it didn't take as much "gray paint" so tha Mariner was faster........

At end of assembly line motors are crunk up for the first time then sent to paint booth motors that crank rite up first time get grey paint all others get black lol love my gray stuff

I thought it was the ones that dynoed above average that got the gray paint.

Best looking cowl ever made with the bridgeports and T3/modvp coming close second.
