1983 Evinrude 35HP how to replace clutch dog?

I got a 1983 35HP Evinrude E35ECTS. I got the bearing carrier out and the snap ring and the big washer, but to my surprise the shifter thingy is blocking me from being able to pull the prop shaft and forward gear out. there is a little pin on the bottom of the shifter thingy that is going around the prop shaft. surely I am not going to have to get that little pin out down inside the casing?? I just want to replace the clutch dog. Is there and easy way to get to it??

I will try to post a pic tomorrow. I saw that screw. but there is still the shifter thingy that is blocking the shaft from coming out.
I never worked on a gearcase smaller than a V-4

Once it's out check the shoulders of the gears at the contact surface with the clutch.

You also have to remove the shift shaft....... the whole thing slides out without the gear

I looked at that picture of the gearcase.. it does not show the shift shaft in the pic. but I will drop the gearcase tomorrow and remove the shift shaft. I just wanted to make sure i did not do it the hard way.. cause that is usually how i do it. lol

The pick does show the lower shaft, item 49 it screws into item 12, remove it.
Remove screw 36 and then I think it all slides out from memory?
what I do remember form 30 years ago was I didnt look forward to fixing one
They key to making them last was the adjustment up behind the lever on the powerhead

yea, that screw #36 is a pin with a tiny cotter pin holding it, and it is all down inside the gearcase in a very difficult spot to get to. I can see that this is not going to be a fun day.

Yes, pull #13 and the shift rod........ then everything but the gear will come, once the propshaft is out, the forward gear will tip out and the pinion gear will fall out

tool can be replaced by using a 12ga wire 20"long.fold 3/8" of wire over and screw it into the cradle where the lower shaft threads into.put wire into prop end of gearcase and up thru shiftshaft seal, use wire to hold up cradle whyle assembling rest of propshaft then unscrew/pull wire and replace s/shaft.-th
