The SHO case should bolt right on...but with some overhang. I'd love to have that 1.73 gearcase...small case with those gears would be something on the old SRV.

The case lines up perfectly with the mid, no overhang The water pump lower plate needs to be trimmed slightly to fit inside the 2.6 mid. The major mod is the drive shaft on the SHO lower is 3/4'' longer than the original. Need to cut the shaft and lengthen the splines.

Rick, you were close, the 86 had a lower ratio of 1.73, but the propshaft is the same length as any other 2.6 case that I have seen. I am trying to modify a new SHO gearcase to fit the old girl. The SHO ratio is 1.75.
When I had my V6 Special I could have sworn that the case itself had a different aspect ratio.

I doubt they dumped them below cost. However, they had to price them to be competitive in each market. In Sweden they were priced above OMC and Mercury, since people appreciated the superior quality of Japanese products. Americans on the other hand were less focused on quality and had strong brand loyalty to the local products, and Yamaha had to price below them.

they were successfully sued twice for dumping product in Asia
For stealing OMC/Volvo sterndrive data they have had a multi year ban on marketing any sterndrives in this part of the world and still dont see them.
Australia was the test market for Mariner which was the Merc Yamaha joint venture, those things were corroding rusting junk. ( I guess they learnt from those?)
Mid 80's there was no issue with quality on Merc and OMC, Merc finally were made for saltwater in 84
OMC started to loose the plot late 80's
Essentially the yanks gifted the business to the japs.
Totally ignored SE Asia ( outside of Australia) so its all Yam now.
Saying that Merc does well with governments in SE Asia
