    Yamaha 220 Plus Ignition Help

I am needing some serious help on a 1984 Yamaha 220 Plus (220AETO). It turns out that the "Microcomputer" has gone out and I can not find another one. I have spoken with Yamaha USA and Yamaha Japan and both of them say this engine was not built there. To the best of my knowledge it was made by Yamaha of Australia.

The motor is in great shape other than the computer, which I can not find a replacement for. Does anyone have any idea where I can find a computer for this engine or if there is a way to bypass the computer and install a mechanical timing advance?

I would greatly appreciate any help on this!

You could convert to the mechanical system. I have a couple of the micro computer set ups that I could part with. Pm me if interested.

"Yamaha built engines in Australia, I dont think so..."

I am just going off of what I have been told by Yamaha when they told me the engine was not built in the US or in Japan.

I would love to get a new computer to put on it and or any information to make it a mechanical motor!

Does anyone have any information on how to convert this motor to the mechanical system and what is needed to do so?

I am talking about doing away with the microcomputer and converting the motor to a mechanical timing advance system. It is my understanding that the only true need for the microcomputer is to advance the timing of the motor as the RPM's increase.

Get an ignition system and throttle arm from a 200.

Never heard of a 220 Plus, but there was a 220 Special in 1984.

    It was built in Japan.

Easiest is to get a computer from mackerel5.

Correct. His engine is the V6 "220 Special". 1984 was the first year the motor was produced and it was also introduced into the US market by Yamaha that same year. The 220 Specials made about 240hp and were built in 1984 and 1985 only with a few straglers in early 1986 when the Excel took over.

You all are correct, it is a 220 Special. However, Yamaha Japan has denied it was made there. The motor has amazing compression numbers and is clean enough to eat off of, doesn't appear it has ever been touched.

I am am going to try and get a computer but if all else fails I will convert to a mechanical system.

Does it require anything more than ignition system and throttle arm from a 200? If anyone has this laying around I would appreciate a price on it. I would love to get this engine going for my dad's Baker.

    Yamaha Japan is wrong.

The heads on that engine are the tightest Yamaha V6 heads. Later engines make power through other means than compression. Make sure to run premium fuel.
