    1987 Johnson V8

    Hello All!

Im new to the High Performance Outboard world and I came across a hell of a deal on a 1987 Johnson V8. Compression is great, mid and gear case is also in excellent condition. The oil pump has been removed so the fuel will need to be mixed in tank. Does anyone know the oil / fuel ratio?

    Thanks for the Input!

I would run your first tank at 32:1. Oil doesn't kill performance-lack of oil kills engines!

Higher amounts of oil than intended with actually make the engine run leaner, because you are giving it less fuel. I think 50:1 is what most pre-mixers run.

Well, I appreciate all of the info. Drove three hours AFTER confirming the compression was good on all 8, and 6 had 150psi and 2 had 95psi. What a joke.

Old wives tale based on theory rather than reality. Most of the original Merc race engines from the '70's had a recommended ratio of 18:1 including the first T3/1750XS V6's. Granted, today we have better oils, but leaning from fuel mixtures down in the 30:1's or even 20's will never cause issues and will likely result in longer life. I run my 280's now at 32:1. and before today's oils ran everything at 25:1.
