Rebuild or replace starter? (blackmax) Ebay starter or Iboats?
The bendix is slipping on the starter of my '85 150 blackmax. Like the one in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c9rakRUQus
I pulled the starter apart and the brushes are toast as well. I found a brushkit online that comes with the bottom housing for $34. I haven't prices the bendix yet.
It looks like I can get a new starter on ebay for $65, Iboats has them for $108. Should I just get a new one? The commentator doesn't look great either.

Has anyone tried aftermarket starters? I'm always weary of them.

I haven't tried one in my outboards ,but I have bought from BD on ebay before for my Big block Chevy GMC truck. Starter was a new aftermarket unit and wipps that BBC over no problem. Been in there 3 or 4 years now. About $120+ from local parts store. Think I payed just over $50 from BD!
I believe there are located in Boston and got the starter the next day.
I would buy that starter.Last edited by s10gto; 04-11-2015 at 06:47 AM.

Well I found the starter for my old 140 TOP and took it apart. The brushes are like new in it. The bendix has a differnet teeth number. I'm going to see if I can fix my 150hp bendix, and make one good starter. I'm just weary of the chinease stuff. Sometimes worn OEM stuff is better than new china :-)

ok, so I know now that it's normal for the bendix to spin inside its self. It like a clutch action. The reason mine was slipping was because I got WD 40 in it. I'm trying to degrease it now. I guess it's clutch type action keeps you from burning the starter up.

Watch for new old stock on ebay thats best. I used a new iboats starter without issue. I also tried the brush replacement and that ended badly.
1984 17vee Bullet w/1985 Johnson 150gt (bob's nose cone, hydrodynamics custom 8in. jackplate, custom skid plate and foil, and 26p trophy plus) currently 70mph tournament loaded.

I soaked the bendix in mineral spirits, and swapped the brushes and based from my other starter. Works like a champ.

DB Electric has what you need at a good price. I use them at the recommendation of people that know on my 'Rude.
