    Lets talk Yamaha's

I have a Action with a 99 Yamaha Vmax 200. Stock motor with carbon reeds. I was told my boat would go 85mph from the previous owner. I was turning a 26p prop at 6300 when I got the boat. In my research and advice from many S&F members and the Facebook page "High Performance Boating" I raised my motor up and experimented with props. I now have a 32p drag 4, which I love! Ive only turned it 5700 at 88.9 and I don't have to touch the wheel. Super stable. Im told if I want to go fast I need a Merc. I guess my goal in the end is to have a 200xs, but for now I love this Yamaha! It runs extremely well. Surprising responsive for a carbureted motor. I think if I spend any money it will be with Hydro-tec before I go with a Merc. Im reaching out to other Yamaha owners and your thoughts on them.

I haven't had a Yamaha outboard other then a 90 tiller steer and a pair of 115s on a 22 whaler (they were all trouble free). I have had a lot of other Yamaha products over the years though (snowmobiles, bikes, zumas, rhinos and motocross) and they are always the innovators and first to come out with something new in the market place. Back in 86 they had the 5 valve heads on there sportbikes, the stuff that they are willing to r release first always seems to get copied by others later (especially the fourstroke conversion process-YZ 400-Raptor-RX1 etc). They are getting a good share of the outboard market here in Florida on the everyday boats and I can see them getting serious about competing with the new 400R based on past history. Yamaha has always liked to be the on top with there bikes and willing break the "agreed market limits on displacement or horsepower" going back to the early 80s when they brought out the first 1100 then the V-Max. They have the resources for sure as well as Honda--take a trip back on the Ford sho (Yamaha designed that motor for ford) it was a great engine but ford didn't back it up with a transmission that would live and look at what Honda does in F1. I hope their fire gets fueled for a future performance outboard.

There is 'much' potential to be tapped while still staying gas efficient and reliable out of any Yami outboard. SuperBender is a Wiz or Hydro-tec as was mentioned.

    I'm vvery happy !

Don't believe everything you hear Chris, they're just rumors

OP sounds like the Vmax is running pretty good at close to 90, have you tried a 30p drag 4? might be about same top end with a couple hundrd more rpm's and better hole shot/midrange.

I had an 87 prov 150 yamaha with 200 reeds and carbs and after 5 years of beating on it I finally blew it up switched to merc and regretted it every day after. I had the block I blew up and another and had already spoken to a ray neudecker (R.I.P) about build both of them but was talked into getting a merc same story you need one to go fast. But the 150 yamaha pushed the boat 95.6 the 200 merc turned 1000 more rpm same prop only gained 1mph. And didn't have the same turn key reliability that the yamaha did. had it for five years put one set of plugs and one head gasket and two water pumps in it. Ran 87 octain gas and the cheapest oil I could find

1987 Hydrostream vking yt with 1987 prov 150 yamaha 85mph (sold)
1999 mirage ski racer with same yamaha 95mph with 19?? 2.4 merc 200 96mph with 2005 2.5xs no top speed never ran a prop bigger than a 24 but got 76mph with it (sold)
    2005 tahoe 215 I/o 4.3 v6 51mph
