2.4 merc 200 hp. Help with jetting!

I have an old merc 200 2.4. I think 87 model but not sure? Doesn't have factory Oiler so i am not sure. Has wh-20 carbs. Velocity stacks, exhaust can out and relieved. has the 2 peice short tuner. Timing set at 24 deg. 130 lbs compression. It has .72 jets in it now. I havent run it yet but wanted to start off right. I cant find much info on the 2.4 with wh-20 carbs from the factory? thanks for any help. I am use to the 2.5s

I think oil injection was optional in 1984 and standard in 1985. Or was it '83 and '84...?

im sure somebody has an answer to the jetting question.

I assume these are the motors and years they came from the factory with wh20 carbs. Dont know if that helps at all. If it has been modified jetting probably not factory setting anyway. JMO

    WH20'S..........1,3,4,5,6 /72's...2 /74.....46's all/idle.

there's a "build date" stamped somewhere around tha base of #2 cyl. on block half, kinda behind tha advance timin' arm...no oiler its probably gonna be first generation block..........Pyro, here's a little info for ya. it was never an option after second gen. motor came out 83/84 I think (crank driven) only electric oiler junk for older stuff was an option......

Yes, I was referring to the gear-driven oil injection. The first year it came out ('84?) it was an option. After that, the V6 motors all had it, right?

no factory oiler (unless it was removed) would be older than 1985.

Wh20's stock had .72 mains except #2 had .74. .46 idle and no vent jets. But could be on a different motor so jetting could vary.

Wh 20's with 72/74 jets on even a stock 200 with todays gas is going to melt a piston,in my opinion.I seem to remember the first were 74 on 1,3,4,and 6,with 76 on 2 and 5. in the mid 80's a service bulletin came to dealers along with 80's and 82's to update the carbs. Most of my modded 2.4's similar to your description get 84/86,more radical motors 86/88.I would start 84/86 and do the basic checks for burn, but I don't think that will be too rich...you want a little safety margin on a lake motor. My opinion, but I've built hundreds of em,Chris

Chris is right...80s in 1,3,4,6 and 82s in 2,5....there was a service bulliten on this a million years ago. I have also found increasing the idle air jets (to lean it) a little (like 50s) helps the idle.

Always ran 80 and 82s in the spring and fall and and 78s in the dead of summer.
