If you do that DO NOT use a cheapie shoulder bolt. It Will break.

Most all of us know someone with a small bench lathe. For those that are familiar, this is a fun little thirty minute job.The owner can run the threads, with tap & die. Most guys with a home shop will help Ya.If you make the end plugs from 1" aluminum you don't need a mill.

I gust finished up this mod. The new Uflex cables are by far much smother than the old Ride Guide set I have.
This was not to hard to do and fits perfect.
Can't wait to try this out on the water.
    Thanks for sharing this.................................

    Hey outasite,
I'm really stoked to come across your conversion! This is a really well described process, and I now plan to tackle it on my '85 Charger DL asap.
The cables currently on my boat are 14.6', so is that the same length I'm looking for with uflex?

    Thanks for the help,
    Ian

If your not moving the helm to the center, then yes same length.Be sure to lay them out side by side and confirm!!!
I would add one more note, when rigging any dual ride guide, try to oppose the cables and rig the cables in tension, rather than compression. That is the smoothest, and safest way!

Great thread(I know its old)! I'm searching high and low for a ride guide 14'6" cable to replace my cable that got so tight it was beyond lubing...the insulation cracked and let salt water get into the works and the rust kept growing... Any chance you want to fabricate one of these extensions for me and I pay you ? I have no lathe or access to one. I'm running out of options and I don't want to replace the whole steering setup - too many other projects stealing budget...Charger Newbie are your cables shot or just looking to be silky smooth new? I may be interested in your old one(s).

Due to the the fact that this conversion requires extending the working end,I would not use it on a single cable system! There may be to much push-pull.By using two cables in "tension" the strength is not a factor, the working cable is allways in pull mode.

Hi speedman79. I have a friend that's a machinist, so I was going to have him make the extension for me. I'll ask if he can make a few, unless outasite wants to take care of it. I'm not sure what shipping from Canada is like. As for my old cables, they were sticky last summer, so I took them out and tried lubing them. One cable was fine, and the other was nearly impossible to move. When I put the boat in this spring, I noticed that the bad cable now prohibits the boat from turning to the right: so it is shot. I'm planning to use this conversion for replacement of the bad cable only right now, as the M86 cable costs $224 plus tax, Canadian.

Agreed - yes I have a dual setup. It's the best viable option I have - thank you!

Charger did you ever get these cables made up? I'd be interested in your buddy making the extension or buying your old good cable (if you decided to replace both).
