V8 Dual Power Packs to Single Power Pack, what's needed?

Anyone ever done the upgrade from dual (old style) to the newer single power pack? If so, what parts are needed? This is for two of my trip setup and I realize that the counter turning motor might not be able to do it, but what about the right turning one? Do I need the rectifier? Timer base? Harness?

For those of you that have followed my thread on my build, I am simply trying to eliminate all possible problems/issues and if I have to buy one more ignition part I thought it might be a good idea to just upgrade the whole enchilada instead of staying with the old dual power pack system. Of course performance is of the essence but so is reliability and ease of operation.

Thanks again for all help and inputs. Monty and I are again comparing schedules for the water testing and tuning, and I just want to make sure I do my part to the best of my ability so as to have Monty tuning rather than repairing old ignition systems.

Not familiar with the V8 systems. From V6 experience, it's possible that you will have to change the flywheel too, depending on whether you want quickstart to function. The single pack systems have quickstart, the dual pack systems don't have it. The flywheels are different part numbers, possibly due to a different center timing ring.

I did the swap on my v6. I had to use the entire wire harness, all electronics and the flywheel.

Why, there is no difference. Single system still has 2 packs built into the single pack. Much cheaper to replace 1 pack than the single with 2 built in?

I did it to raise my limiter. I would have bought packs with a raised limiter for the early system, but i have a complete parts motor with all electronics. Early system is limited @ 6200 and later single pack system is 6700.

That suggest the flywheel is the same, yet the part numbers are different....

I do not know, hence I asked the question on here. My mid motor has the single pack and has always ran better than the dual pack engines.... Coincidence? I'm not sure....

You would need the entire system, the flywheel is different. You can use your flywheel but the quick start system would need to be disabled. The race wheels use the ctr pick up like the 86/7 stock ones and to run them with a single box you dont use the quick start. The locations of the two pick ups on each flywheel have one the same one different, the one that actually triggers the ign in std mode is the same. The problem is the factory no longer has timer bases for the butterfly packs and I have not had luck with aftermarket ones.

Also replacement dual packs had limiters raised from 62 to 6700

Take a closer look at the cdi drawing and you will see they are not the same, the 86/7 V4/6 should also include the 8, the 88 model is when the butterfly pack started

Thanks for all great advice. I'll stick with the old system for now and will just replace components as needed. I will also consult with Monty about what's needed. I just want them all to work properly..
