Built 2 liter stalls out when started in gear.
Have built 2 liter that won't start when in gear unless I hit the throddle hard. It will not idle in gear. I have to start in gear because I race it. Starts fine in neutral, revs up OK. What do do?

Thanks. Got old carbs. How much bump to the idle timing?

Old carbs??? Meaning they have not been cleaned floats set etc?? I'd take care of that first, but you did say "Starts fine in neutral, revs up OK". As far as idle timing that depends on what its currently set at and how you did it? I usually start at 8* as a base line. Then I adjust till that motor likes it.

Thanks for the info. Will do.

Oh did you index the flywheel on all cylinders? If so you should have timed on the low cylinder and gone from there. its OK to time on #1 for a fishing/stock motor. But a racing motor you should IMO index the flywheel on all cylinders and time accordingly.

Greg, does this motor have a cross drilled intake? If you do, that gives less signal (suction) at the carbs to pull fuel at idle. You can move the pickup timing up until it will start reliably in gear. The race motors are actually locked at max advance, but will "idle" at like 2500rpm in neutral, like 2000rpm in gear.
Once started, will it idle in gear currently? If it will, maybe it's just not spinning fast enough on the starter to pull some fuel...will it start if you primer it? Maybe 24v to the starter is what you need.Keith-

If you already have the idle advance set at 8 degrees and it advances immediately on the cam as the throttle plates are opened I would richen the idle jets (smaller is richer).Cross drilled=.094 hi speed jets/.042 idle jets-ball park start-depends on carb numbers) Maximum advance on the spark should be no more than 26 degrees for your kind of racing. You may want to "lock" the advance at 25-26 degrees BTDC. DON'T SHIFT INTO GEAR WITH ENGINE RUNNING AT MORE THAN 1000 RPM. Check your compression. If more than 150 pounds you may want to run fuel rated at 93 -95 octane with ignition advanced to 25 degrees and RPM of 6200 or more. Plenty of oil (30:1)is a good mix. More info than you asked for, use what you want. Rod
