It feels good to get a little time in this project. This boat was essentially given up for scrap and to me it is a great canvas to move forward with. It was not my intention to build with the surface drive but it might be an interesting moderate performance boat with this drive powered by an L92 alloy block engine.
A friend of mine scrounged up this drive since for years I have wanted to build a semi replica of this one off Glastron, As yet I have not been able to scrounge up a hull since the value of these have skyrocketed.

My goal for this summer with this SB is to do as much restoration work as I can achieve, Front deck, fuel tank area etc that we have been discussing in this thread.
I might along the way drill a few holes and hang this drive, nothing that is not reversible.
My time is limited although I am now retired, well I guess self employed never really retire so I am just tired. But since I am building another airplane i need to keep that project up at pace.

Big work session today, Started as the frost was lifting. Started with laying out my cuts and then went for it. I thought I would just slide the rear seat section aft but chose to lift it out, easier to just get it out of the way.

From that point I made some calculated cuts allowing me to fold the sidewall inside the top deck allowing me to lift the full cockpit section up and out.

That got me into the hull, more room in front of the tank than I expected, not to mention it has been holding water there.

I then cut the skin off the top of the tank bay and lifted it out.

Spent some time drilling through the bulkheads to allow water to flow aft, I definatly will run a tube under the tank allowing the bow to drain.

A question for the group, I am going to remove the foam from the fuel tank bay.

What is an efficient way to remove this existing foam? I no longer have full use of both arms such that breaking the foam out with hand held tools is not something I can do anymore.
I do not know if my pressure washer will cut the foam away but I have seen beautifully clean, bare tank bays. Just not sure how to achieve the goal.

I used one of these and cut it into pieces then put a wire wheel on a 4" grinder to clean the rest.

OK, I have been working with a Makita Oscillating tool, absolutely superb system these are. I had started with slicing a 2"slot down the center, but so far have not been able to break this free. Guess I need to dice it up more.
I had been trying to get a flat bar under the foam, but the foam is winning.

A hand, wood saw works great.

Line it up against a stringer etc, as a guide, and slow and easy.
Will let you cut all the way to the bottom.

I think, if you take your time, and experiment w/method, you can probably do it w/one hand/arm.

You won’t cut it totally free, but goal is, enough to shove a flat bar in the void and pop it loose.

Do it in pc’s/sections, not all at once.

I had started with a Japanese pullsaw, the flexible super thin blade, They do not cut at the far end so I was fighting it, it was winning. I will dig out a good old school saw, used to have a few different ones, not sure what I still have.

A sawzall w/a 12” blade works too, but the blade goes where it wants.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

I use them, the super stiff "The Ax" blades I find a decent control with but I do not like the chance of secondary damage is the get to the hull and I do not sense it. The flexible long blades are nice to lay against a surface as well which I am finding the oscillating tool to very good at as well.

If I commit to pulling the rear tank bulkhead out this would get allot easier. Then the powertools can work flush to the hull instead of most all plunge cuts.

An update on my project, I got busy over the summer and just wrapped up my Superboat to wait till I can get back to it. Still not ready to dig in but good news is I just bought a '76 20' Glastron that I will install the surface drive onto. So no Sacrilege to the Superboat will happen.
This is what will get the drive.

For next year I am thinking I will do core repairs and build a gas tank for my Superboat. Restore the factory braces back to the transom. Install a foot throttle and mount my Yamaha on it's jack and run this a bit. Where it goes from there who knows. At this time it is well wrapped up for the winter.

Here is the true savior of this old Superboat, as I close out my outdoor work season I have the surfdrive hung on the back of a 1976 Glastron. I expect I will get e thread going for this project if anything is will be unique.
