For the guide coat i prefer the rattle can but it can be had in dry form made by 3- M and to tell you the truth the last Boat Co that i worked for tried the the dry which works well but the the guide coat in spray form is a far better product .

Hey guy , first off it is not pointless to use guide coat on Primer because that is total B/S considering i have been doing this type of work for well over 40 plus years having worked at many Boat Co's in the past , often spraying 14 gallons of primer ( Duratec ) or more at one time on Custom boats / Plugs .

Charlie , nine times out of ten ................... common sense should most likely be your guide depending on the size of the hole and not to mention that you should allow for shrinkage when filling a hole with a filler made with Mirco Ballons / Cab o sil & resin or do you fill and glass the hole over using a very light fabric just to avoid any shrinkage down the road ...........................once again these are just suggestions .

Ginger, most of the work I will be doing on this hull will be with Vinylester so I will be dealing with shrinkage.

So far the main structure does not look bad but it sure does need work. Do you know how long Bob owned this and who had it before?

Im not trying to bash your experience, I think you may be misunderstanding what im saying. When I prep a boat I do spray guide coat on the primer. But I use 2 primers when prepping a boat. The first being high-build, the second being epoxy primer. All I suggested is it isn't crucial to spray guide coat on the 1st coat of primer (high-build) because I will only be spraying Epoxy primer over that once its sanded. The basecoat will lay on the Epoxy primer not the High-build. Therefore im not concerned with the finish of the high-build being absolutely flawless because when I spray the epoxy primer over that it will lay on enough material where I can spray guide coat on that coat of primer, sand it and create the finish necessary for a quality paint job all on the coat of epoxy primer, not going through to the first layer being the High-build. Lets not turn this into who has a better resume.

Hi Alby, this will be in autopsy and planning mode till it starts getting warm out, unless I sneak it in the shop before my next big paying job. But that job sits till I get the go ahead from the owner so maybe I will lift the cap and pull the liner out. I sure would like to do more inspection on this.

Bobby hasn't used the boat in at least 3 or 4 years. Then used it for 5 years from what I can remember. Don't know who owned it before but my father is good friends with bobby and I can find out where the boat came from if you would like. Just let me know.

For me it is as much a curiosity more than need to know. I like to trace history when I can.
The sitting for 3-4 may explain why the floor in the bow was rotten, the boat may have sat with the bow low. I wish the original seats had been with the boat, I expect they are long gone.
Let Bobby know the boat is being rebuilt.
