    260/ProMax cowl pan compatibility?

My mid has the original 2.4 200 adapter, whichever type that is. For years, I have ran my Bridgeport with a 260 cowl and pan, which conveniently blocks off the unused triangular poppet dump passages.

Suppose I wanted to switch back to a poppet valve motor, such as a 2.5 200 or 225 ProMax... From what I recall, the ProMax pan plate has those passages opened up. So, would I just need to open up those passages and bolt it up? Is there not a way to run the cooling system with a second dump hose, without opening up the pan?

If you want to run a steel bore motor than your best option is to run with a functioning poppet valve and thermostats for temperature control, which means opening the cowl pan base plate. You can do it just dring a hole (larger than the dump hole in the exhaust plate) in the pan were the "triangle" section from the poppet dumps. I don't think there is room to dump the discharge from the poppet above the cowl pan base plate.

If I'm reading your ? correctly, I would get the correct 2.5 2pc plate, they are cheap enough to obtain and I would run the cooling stock as intended.

The problem is you still won't have a functioning poppet. Dumping the extra water is ok at higher rpm but you'll be dumping too much at low speed.

I'd rather just run it as designed. What's different between the 2.4 200 plate and the ProMax plate?

It sounds like I would just need to open up the passages in the 260 pan, which would really suck of I ever found a 260 ph I could afford.

Drill a hole in the pan sized so you can thread it for a pipe plug later if you go to a 260. Just be sure to locate the hole so the plug will clear everything.

Just did this swap. Didn't know about the dump my 260 pan doesn't have until transomstand enlightened me. Tomorrow I will pull powerhead off and break out the drill. Gonna miss that 260. If I could kick my own ass I would.

If you change to a 260 and install a 1 piece exhaust plate, then the hole in the cowl plate won't matter.

THANK YOU, that's what I needed to understand. So the 2.4 200 plate is the two-piece style, and the one-piece style does NOT have the poppet dump passages at all. Perfect. You're a lifesaver.
