    When is shimming a lower unit required?

    When is shimming a lower unit required? I disassemble two lower unit to take the internal out of one to put in the next is shimming required ?

    If you replace the gear set, drive shaft, bearings (forward gear or drive shaft) or gear case. I may have missed one, but one of the gear case experts will be along soon.

    If any of the components are changed it needs to be set up with the tools correctly. This includes swapping internals to a different case

    Definitely need to check when changing case.

    On a standard rotation unit, you can change the prop shaft, reverse (only) gear, shift shaft or bearing carrier without shimming. None of these affect the positioning relationship of the pinoin and forward gear.

    What about if you dissemble everything just to shorten the driveshaft and readsemble?

    Just a Shorten of shaft.... np........I know a guy that says that the shims are just too make up for the case machineing varianes.....the shafts and bearings are held close from Merc........so the shims stay with the case........just one opione.....JMO.....ck pinion hight......sorry for bad spelling..... late wisky 12.00.......

    I was kinda thinkin the other way around .. See if this makes sense.
    If it's sloppy before you take it apart, it's going to be just as bad when you hang it back together ... Pretty simple to check back-lash and then pinion ht. as it's coming apart.
    Lets you know where you stand and what adjustments that need to be made before / during the time it's being put back together ..
