    35 Johnson Sea Horse

    I have a 35 HP Johnson outboard, about a mid 1970's.
When I put the top plug in, and the bottom out and crank it, it starts right up... take the top one out, put in the bottom, cranks right up... put both in and crank it. Nothing. What causes that?

"about mid 70s" is a problem. Before 76-77 they had points which could be a bad ground. Around those dates they changed to CDI and you would need a OMC repair manual and an OHM meter to check it out. Hope this helps Gary

Thank you olboatman for your reply, it has a CDI, the model # of the CDI is CD2 113-2285 if that helps.

Is it rope or electric start, with one plug out its going to spin faster as it reaches tdc for the cylinder with the plug in.

I had a mid 70's 20HP Johnny. I can't remember just what the problem was, but it was a ING issue. Had CDI. Great old wrench in town told me probably a bad CDI. Yanked the flywheel, and put a new one in. When I took out the old one, you could see it was arcing out the body or a wire to ground. Can't remember.

Anyway try yanking both plugs, in the boot, and ground them to the block. Top only, bottom only, then both and see if still a good spark. If not, I would replace the CDI.
Probably the second one in the link needed. Compare to what you have now.

As Robby said it most likely is arching to ground. You need to pull the flywheel to check that out. Gary

Ok thanks, I did pull top and bottom seperatly and the spark was blue. But I haven't tried both at the same time. I'll try that.

BTW Those models wake up to lite mods. They are still used on a class of tunnels for racing.I am converting a 25hp to 35 for my SLT Inflatable Cat this winter. They have a good HP to weight for a cross flow and parts are cheep and available. Gary

Yep, as aged box and wires under the FW? Heat and age kills'em. And as old J-Rudes are "keepers", I'd just quit dicking around start fresh the $65 new CDI. Gotta remember middle 70's was damn near 40 years ago! And speaking CDI's? Just replaced one a 1986 Honda CH 150 scooter. Some times fire right up, some time crank and zip. New in, and runs like a champ! Do the CDI as a great little motor, and like OBM said, easily "modded".
