Buying boat question on value of motors ?? Help

I'm very new to the outboard world. I looking at buying a 28' cat hull with mercury 2.5L 250hp carbureted motors. I'm guessing year around 92. I want to upgrade to 300x or 300xs motors. What do you feel the value is of these motors are
as a package ? We did a compression check they seem to be in ok condition. Older man owns boat he said they were babied most of its life. Also wondering if these are wanted motors and if anybody would buy them ?

Unfortunately you won't find those motors in the NADA guide.

No such thing as a 250 HP. 2.5L Mercury. Maybe 245 HP Mercury Hi performance 2.5 carb?

They would probably be the 245 hp then. It sounded like they were a high performance model and they were carbureted. That's why I didn't look on nada. There's usually a differance between a book value and what it's going to sell for. That's why I was hoping you guys could narrow the gap.

    Agree with all posted above.

Finding recently sold motors of same year and HP is best guide. I sold a '92 2.5 EFI 260 with a CLE to another member here about 8 years ago for $4,000. It still ran fine but was getting close to a rebuild, which the buyer was fully aware of. I have no idea if this helps you or not, but buyer and seller in that situation we're both happy.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by encouraging class hatred. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than you earn.

Hey velocity72 that was another question I had. how many hrs did you have on motor? And how often should you go threw these motors ?
