Is this a sportsmaster lower unit?
Hoping for some clarification. I have been searching google etc and I can not determine the type of lower unit. Is this a sportsmaster?
Can anyone point me to a lower unit rebuild kit? I have destroyed the forward/reverse/pinion and bearings due to water in the oil.
Any gotchas to watch for when trying to ensure I get the right replacement.
I plan to count the teeth but I suspect it is 1.87:1 etc.
Short/Long/Fat shaft? Not really sure.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

The shaft length is going to depend on your mid. Thats a small shaft 4 hole CLE. Hold onto the parts even if you do decide that replacing the lower is cheaper or easier than having it rebuilt. The output shafts especially are not available any more and are worth some money . Case looks to be in good shape too.

Thanks for the quick replies so far.
I am not the original owner of my Merc, it is a franken-motor. Midsection from 2.4L offshore EFI, now is a 2.5L block with BASS Midsection and this CLE Lower.
Do all the 4 Hole CLE have the same guts?
I am struggling to lookup parts for this lower.
I am trying to understand what exact parts I will be needing to replace the forward/reverse/pinion, bearings, shims, seals etc. (Hoping that driveshaft and propshaft are not bent... fingers crossed, still have not fully torn down)
If so can someone point me to suggested link on marineengine.com or boats.net that gives exploded view of all parts of a CLE lower?
Any guidance appreciated.

starting to get the hang of looking up the parts.
Mercury CLE (Cresent Leading Edge) Gear Kit:
44104A 7
http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/me...4104A%207.html
What I am having trouble with is confirming that the list of CLE years match the year of my CLE. I am not sure what year my CLE is.
Will the 44104A 7 fit all years of CLE lowers?

As long as you're looking it up for a 4 hole you're fine. That is the correct gear set. It shares the same parts as the Sporty. You should have a single bearing carrier with a rear drain screw, and a propshaft bearing surface that is 1-1/4" diameter. What you need to watch for is that someone has not changed over to 200 style internals as has been mentioned.
Several sets of gears will fit the housing but all parts need to match.
Another word of caution, these housings are getting old and can go out of round or wear grooves inside the carrier bore, so be sure you have a good snug fit with the carrier or the orings won't seal and you'll lose all the gear oil or worse.Living in the Freedom provided by Bud Conner and his fellow warriors.

transomstand, thanks for the details.
Oh boy, this is getting messy now!
According to http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/me...4104A%207.html
It appears that the same part is for the SportsMaster, but I don't see reference to CLE 4 Hole? just CLE.
Anyway, my bearing carrier does not have a drain screw, my drain screw on my CLE is on the front cone only (you can just see it under the 4 water pickup holes from my original picture above)
However I do now see in the manual that I should have had a drain screw in my bearing carrier as well?
http://1manual.com/Mercury%20manuals/Service%20Manual%20PDFs/TwoStroke/824052r3/6a.pdf
(page 12, Ref Number 73 and 74)
Thank you so much for highlighting this.
If I understand correctly then, it looks like the internals have been changed over from original CLE to some other. Does this mean the prop shaft, clutch dog etc are all different diameter than the original CLE internals?
I am sufficiently over my head now. Taking it into the shop. Thanks for all the advice, at least I can ask some informed questions at the shop.
Paul.

Ain't this fun?
It's not too bad once you get it sorted out.

My 4 Hole CLE's (RH & LH) have both the rear and front drains.
I thought all the 4 Hole CLE's had the rear drain on the bearing carrier?Stoker Sport Tunnel 22 SST Twin 260's
