how to bleed oil on a 1986 mercury black max 200

howdy again folks, yesterday i was out on the lake and pulled up to a beach and lifted my motor and went for a swim, then i noticed oil was leaking out of the engine cowling and into the water so i pulled the top off and saw that both clear vinyl hoses from the oil injection pump were broken. i'm not sure why they both broke at once but i have replaced them but i have no idea how to bleed the air from the oil system as i can see there is air in one of the tubes. (the one from the top mounted reservoir is fine, the other one has some air in it) i'm not too engine saavy but i noticed there is a screw on top of the oil injection pump that differs from the others. it is a silver screw with a red oring on it. can anyone tell me if this is the bleed screw? sorry i do not have pictures but can take them if needed. also, a quick guide on how to bleed would be great.. do i just remove and let oil drain into a can until no air bubbles? thanks again!

    update:

i realized that must be the bleed screw so i unscrewed it and let the oil run out for about 30 seconds and oil was coming out the screw but the air bubble would not leave the hose. i took some pics to show the problem. i also tried looking online and someone posted that the oil injection pump outlet hose will often purge itself during operation. i am not sure if the hose that has the bubble is the "outlet" hose or not so if anyone could help me that would be great. i included a picture, as you can see there is about a half inch air bubble in the top of the hose that changes level from half inch to roughly an inch during operation. i let engine idle for about 15 minutes and noticed not much of a difference when i shut it off. Thanks again.

    * picture is very large, sorry for inconvenience*

most everybody on this site throws that system in the trash ( its not if it will fail but when ) there are guys on here that tell you to keep it cause its no trouble with there one and only motor with it on there but a person such as myslf who builds motors all year finds 75% or more of the blown motors i get are early model failed oil injection

Easy enough job to do it on the sandbar. Cheap insurance too.

Just make sure to premix and run double-oil for a few minutes before you pull it.

ok thanks guys, i'll pick one up, anyone know where i'd find one for my motor?

but in the mean time if someone has an answer to my problem i'd still appreciate it as i would really like to use my boat within the next 2 weeks instead of waiting for a part in the middle of summer!

i found this page and it details how to do the procedure just in case anyone came across this in the future with the same problem."

i'll try tomorrow and report back

thanks, does anyone know how to disconnect the linkage for the oil pump so I can hold it open to remove the air bubble first? do I just pull off the plastic on the round part or is there some way to do it, I really don't want to break anything. Thanks.

Just pull the oil line, dribble some oil into it, and push it back on. The oil bubble isn't going anywhere since gravity drops the oil below it, so it just stays at the top. It's not going to pass no matter what you do to the linkage.

That bubble won't be the cause of failure when it eventually fails.
