1989 vegas xt setup
Anyone out there with a vegas xt with some advice? I am new to this board and need some input. currently have a evinrude 225 runs pretty good but am looking for some prop, engine hieght, jack plate info. running a 28 big ear chopper now at 6200 rpms want to try to get more out of it. Also have availibility of a merc 200 optimax efi 2001. would it be a good replacement choice? would there be any gain. Thanks in advance

Safety first: You should run a foot throttle, and some time of engine kill with a lanyard attached to you. Life vests aren't a bad idea either.
What year is the Evinrude?
Do you have a GPS or a means of determining speed with any precision? Before you can see if you are making any gains by making changes, you need to determine your speed.
Do you have any setback?
I'd recommend at least 6 to 10 inches of setback in the form of a hydraulic jack if you can afford it.
Do you have low water pickups? A bob's nosecone on the Evinrude with low water pickup plumbing will allow higher engine hieghts. This is pretty much essential for performance on that hull. That being said, the setback mentioned above would be best in the form of hydraulic so that you can get maximum engine height at top speeds. If not in the budget, start with the center of the nosecone about even with the bottom of the lowest point of the center pad on the back of the boat, and mount higher each test, making sure you are getting at least 15 - 20 psi water pressure at WOT.
The Mercury engine would probably be a better all arounder for that boat. It's lighter, (therefore it will handle a little better), it's fuel injected, and probably making just as much HP (again I don't know exactly what Evinrude you have).
Tell us more about your rig and welcome to the board.
PS - I hate math, can anyone do the prop/slip speed calculation for him?2004 Hydra-Sports Vector 2600 - twin 225 Yamahas

Oh yea
Oh yea. I didn't even notice that you have Mullica River in your location.
That is one of the first Hydrostreams I ever rode in. In fact it is the first tunnel hull I ever saw. I remember I was about 16 when that boat was sitting at Munroe's Marina brand new waiting for that Evinrude to be rigged.
So if nothing has changed, you do have a hot foot, and I think a manual jackplate about 6" setback right?
That motor is probably pretty tired by now. I'd suggest the Merc if you can swing it. You're going to want to try some different props too. It should make more RPMs than it is with that 28 chopper. Have you done a compression test?
Who is Dan? Is he the guy who bought the black Mirage from Matt in Pa?
I'll be gracing Great Bay with a 21 Skater this year. Check the link below for photos.

Yes mike that is the boat. and Dan is the one with the mirage. The boat never had a jackplate on it. I need to get replacement interior the old seats are gone and the box's in the floor are starting to delaminate from the flooring. other than that the hull is still tight very minimal spiders around splash well but nothing to be concerned about. maybe i can find some used seat shells on here. have not done a compression check (afraid of what i might find)LOL...
checked out your pics... SWeeeeeeeeeeeet. Good luck!Last edited by Bill Miller; 02-15-2003 at 04:26 PM.

speaking from experience, 6" of setback will fly you solo, but even with one passenger, you need positive trim to keep the bow up with only 6."
8" to 10" would work best. 28" chopper for top end, 25" or 26" Trophy small hub for romping around.'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI

Hey Bill
I hear the Mullica has some pretty bad ass boats down there. Somebody told me there is a new twin OB Kryptonite that flys around down there, is that true? I might have to come down and check them out!
