93 2.5l xri 200 loses water pressure when up on plane

Hey guys, Just looking for a bit of advise. I am likely going to buy a checkmate with a 200 horse xri on it. seller says he can idle the boat all day but when up on plane it loses water pressure, down to about 2psi and then it gets hot, buzzer comes on and temp goes to 200. It sounds like the gearcase had a nosecone put on it and some other shoddy work done and seller and I think that is likely the problem. He says he has had the complete waterpump kit replaced, tried head gaskets, and a few other things. My question is could it be any problem with the powerhead that would cause this?
    thanks in advance.

If he put a new water pump housing on it's probably not sealing correctly. Off a plane it's under water with no air to suck in and when you plane off the mid empties and it sucks air and looses water psi.

Is it too far up? Do you have a LWP?

If it has a Bobs LWPU on the L/U, check the hose on the gear case...I've seen the hose have a rupture that was not easily seen and the engine would run good in the water at idle (hose is submerged) then overheat as soon as the boat came on plane (hose out of the water).... I would also look to make sure the water tube seal on the outlet of the waterpump is installed.

Well i'd guess if its the hose that should be easy to find... how would a guy go about getting any rubber chunks out if that were the problem?

The hose normally ruptures out, not in. I doubt rubber parts in the pickup are your problem. It's that once on plane the water pump sucks air not water.

I had a friend with the same problem. He drilled the lower unit for the nose cone in the wrong spot. It would go on plane suck air and over heat. We build a new lower and drilled and tapped the hole in the correct place and never had the problem again

That is what I'm hoping is the case, find a used gearcase and put on and be done. I have a buddy with a 2.4l 175hp merc, Thinking that I can borrow his gearcase and test it out to make sure that is the problem. From what I understand that 2.4/175horse gearcase should bolt right on, correct?
Thanks to all for the help.

Yeah the gear cases should interchange just fine. Try out his case that you know works and see what happens!! Good luck.

I appreciate all the help and ideas from everyone, Thanks a million. I'm heading to pick this thing up this weekend. I will start by borrowing a gearcase and see if that solves the problem. If that takes care of it I have a line on a used cle for 800.00 complete. Questions on that: Is 800.00 a good price? and are the internals on the cle the same as a stock case? do props interchange? Thanks to everyone again

Well, I got the boat home, now just wait for a foot of snow and a few feet of ice to melt so I can try it out. What do you guys think about a used 2 hole cle for 800.00? Guy is on the checkmate forum and says it has been taken apart and checked out, all in good shape.... Thanks again for all the input.

The CLE prop shaft is the same as far as interchanging props with stock lower units (all but fatshaft lowers)....the inernals and not the sames as a stock lower, different bearing carrier, propshaft and gears (If I remember correctly). The two hole CLE is the first series and I think you need to make sure it has a blowout ring installed, they didn't have one from the factory.
