Sutphen was a west coast boatbuilder to the best of my recollection, not at the top of the list but "Respectable" as clean producers of their own designs. seem to remember more daycruiser designs than flatties or anything else. stepped into the openwater market, total devotion to a singular endeavor such as Colorado River Cruisers may have been their best direction. the Offshore Market was dominated by East coast companys such as Cigarette and others in that era, were front and center with the water conditions needed to evaluate the progression of hulls of that size. fun out
most overnite successes usually take at least 10 years

Sutphen is originally a NJ company and still has ties to this area.

    Very well made boats.

Old thread but i picked up a 1985 Sutphen 20 with a 250 Yamaha outboard on it. Took it out a few times and realized its due for a transom replacement. Does anyone know if this is a cored hull? or where else I should look for rot? Doesn't seem like there's much wood as the floor is solid. Can't find much information on this hull. Iv only seen a picture of 1 other with a outboard. Thanks!

Ritchie built his boats with plywood. I races a 34 Sutphen for many years back in the 90's through 2000 Won many races in that boat and the world in 95. Awesome boats. Our boat was BUCKSHOT ran in B class. Sutphen is still making boats down here in Cape Coral FL.

Your boat is beautiful. That's the only other outboard 20 iv seen in photos! I'm located in New Britain, CT. Here is my boat. Seems to be all original. I redid the interior this past summer and plan on having someone do re-do the transom and swap out the heavy saltwater motor for a 225 mercury or a 225 vmax. Gel coat is in 7/10 condition just needs a good buff. Had the boat up to 59 mph with plenty more in it. Absolutely love the look of this hull. Any more info on construction/issues/set up would be much appreciated

Everything is original on my boat except the wiring and the outboard and accessories.
It had a Evinrude 235(2thirsty5) from the factory, now it has a Mercury 250XS.
We have been fortunate to own several very original Sutphens, I currently own it's bigger brother
a 1985 26 Rum Runner, just happened to be in the Toronto Boat Show

I was down in the Cape a couple yrs back, w/some time to kill and tried to find them and failed miserably.

Not sure there was even a building left at their listed address.

I lived down there in ‘04 and remember they had one of their boats in a parade through the Cape.

    Was way cool!

Was one of only a few designs that you could tell from a 100 yds away.

    Those small boats are gorgeous.

PS, only knew of them from the Cape.
Had no idea they were another Jersey builder.
I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

I refuse to allow common sense to interfere w/my boat buying decisions.

A few years back Rich was also operating in North Jersey. He was going back and forth between NJ and FL. I'm not sure what covid did to the whole operation but if you track him down he will know plenty about your boat and be happy to share it.
