I tried to steer clear of the feud — both were good friends at that time . Also both could be volatile >
i would stay with PRUETT one time and then Garbrecht another. Mercury was just one big happy family at that time even though upper management was being shuffled like a pack of playing cards.
PRUETT was doing both offshore and circuit around that time. Garbrecht had replaced Bill Steel—- Fred Hauenstien came to Mercury——Charlie Strang went to OMC—-C.K.was retired from active duty
Charlie Alexander was head honcho——-SIROIS was doing both Offshore and Circuit but went solely offshore in 1971. Yamaha and Mercury were tying the knot in an unholy alliance. Was a time of great change in the marine industry— and then of course there were the factory wars !!!!!!!!!
Charlie Strang was changing things with the Wankel. Except it didnt happen—- V8’s came along and went the same way as the rotary [simply died]. OMC weny belly up——Would be many years later before Mercury made a success of 400hp+ outboards.!!!!!!!!

What a Decade of Drama with personnel's changing alliances, engine development and boat designs.

Surely, a Golden Era of achievements and character stories.

November--1970 I was trying to mind my own business --race a bunch of times in several different classes---

Looking forward to my retirement on the Miami Fire Department---

---and my whole life turned around--

---and I had become the ENEMY!!

Simply can’t believe red bird man is as old as you, Jackie! It just seems like Havasu 69 was last week and all the fun that I had out there. As a young man Pit crewing for some of the best racers out of South Florida! I had to skip school for 10 days and almost flunked out of school. Maybe I did I don’t remember, but I didn’t get to go to Havasu anymore with an experience.

Did try with a CARNITI for two years ——did have a tad more THRUTCH than the Mercury 50 hp. And i won the British championship with it in 1966. But it was a bit of a lottery. If it kept running, i won——-but it was a wee bit fragile . Whereas the 500 Merc was bulletproof—-both the Konig and CARNITI were grenades .
