What is the best lower unit to run on an Allison XR2002?

I have an xr 2002 with a modified 200 and 15'' leg. I was wanting to know what is the best lower unit to run on this boat. Not using it for "racing" but looking to have fun and get good handling. I have heard CLE blows out around 100, sportsmaster is very reliable but a little big, and merc 200 can't take the abuse of 7500 to 8500 rpm's. I would like to know the opinion of the guys that run these boats and know which lower works for them. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Most of the guys I see around here are running a coned 200 case with an occasional sporty. The racing guys usually have a coned XR6 case. Don't know of many if any that are running a CLE.

Coned Torquemaster is the absolute best.

Coned XR6 is the fastest and best handling but it's also the weakest of the bunch. If you're only running a 200hp motor it may last awhile with proper care. You can get one built with beefed up internals but it's very expensive.

Coned 200 case would be good choice. Whoever told you about a 200 case not holding up to 8500rpm is just plain wrong! If it's built right and maintained properly you should have no problems but if you plan on running the piss out of it all the time, you'll want to take it up a notch and get a 200 case with sportmaster internals.....more expensive but more robust.

I dug this old thread up because I have the same boat and question but I have a 260 or maybe something stronger and I'm running a 12" mid with a Bob's coned CLE, full skeg. This boat has duel opposed ride guide steering and the torque on the wheel is EXHAUSTING!! I'm new Allison's and this torque is making it very difficult to get a handle on this boat. I'm open to swapping my gear set and shortened driveshaft into a different case if it would help.

Engine looks very high which makes torque worse. But managing torque is mainly tuning the prop, skeg, and lower unit shape. Engine height also affects that tuning. What props have you tried?

How many turns of the steering wheel lock to lock with that steering setup?

The boat has a hydraulic jack plate and its all the way up in that pic. Here's a couple with it down where I ran it. I've only tried a 26P real ET so far but when I bought the boat it came with seven though hub props and a lot of them were 4-blade. I sold all but one, a 23P 4-blade but we have ice on the lake up here now. I bought the boat from a friend that bought it from the original owner and he got the props from him. The boat hasn't been touched since it was new in 1990. He did tell me the torque was a lot less with the 4-blade prop. Not sure on the lock to lock?

Is there no torque tab on the skeg? Hard to tell in the pictures. Without a tab I don't think any prop in the world will help.

Looks like your steering system doesn't give you much 'leverage' in other words, the mounting distance and angle that your ride guide cables mount to v.s. the distance to the swivel tube.
That might have something to do with the amount of feedback you're feeling through the wheel.

That's an interesting thought. I hate to change the steering system, I think it's a one off system that someone spent a lot of time custom building, it's what makes this boat somewhat unique.

Mr. Oneal…..one must make sure your props are flo-torque hubs as I don't remember and Paul can only run small so if they are welded fatties we are on to Plan B......BTW Paul, there will be a way for us to figure out the steering as I cannot see you deleting such a bad ass setup. Remember, something that sexy and cool, always comes with consequences.....like hookers and chlamydia, just ask Scottie LOL!!!
I have a boat or two.... that I never get to drive
