280 Alien to 200xs opti cowling mods?
I've been searching and can't find any information on the subject. I have a stock Mercury 280 ROS alien cowling on my 200efi. I am currently building a 200xs opti to put on the boat. Do you have to buy the opti/alien stainless plate that spaces the cowling back or can you cut the inside plastic and gain enough clearance?

Plate is pretty cheap from Merc, $200 bucks list price. At least that'll get you on the water. The skirt, however... at last check over 700. I've been looking for a used skirt, no matter if it's cut up or broken as long as it can be used as a plug so I can send it to HNR and have a carbon one made.

Yeah I haven't seen any used ones come up for sale either. I might hold off on the skirt until HNR or someone makes an aftermarket one.
