280 Alien to 200xs opti cowling mods?

I've been searching and can't find any information on the subject. I have a stock Mercury 280 ROS alien cowling on my 200efi. I am currently building a 200xs opti to put on the boat. Do you have to buy the opti/alien stainless plate that spaces the cowling back or can you cut the inside plastic and gain enough clearance?

You need the 200xs Stainless plate and the 200xs skirt (if you want the skirt) Even then you may need to slightly trim the baffle inside the cowling.

Thanks! I was thinking it would be one or the other. I didn't realize I may have to do both. Guess I'm in the market for a plate and a skirt.

Plate is pretty cheap from Merc, $200 bucks list price. At least that'll get you on the water. The skirt, however... at last check over 700. I've been looking for a used skirt, no matter if it's cut up or broken as long as it can be used as a plug so I can send it to HNR and have a carbon one made.

Yeah I haven't seen any used ones come up for sale either. I might hold off on the skirt until HNR or someone makes an aftermarket one.
